You’ve probably figured out from the picture that this isn’t a custom of the DC Comics Blue Devil. This Blue Devil was created by my customer, Matt Spaulding back when he was in the 6th grade. Matt’s Blue Devil could best be described as a mix of Green Hornet and Batman.

Work In Progress Pics
I used my dremel to carve and sand a ton off of Hal’s head for the hat to fit on.
To modify the mask, I sanded down the edges that were going to be sculpted over and then went at it with Aves Fixit Sculpt.
The hardest part of this custom had to be getting the hat on correctly. First, getting the hat off the Question’s head, without destroying it, was a PIA as it was glued down pretty tight. I tried heating it with a hairdryer and gently prying at it but it wasn’t coming off, so I had to cut through the top of the head with an Exacto blade as close to the hat as possible. Then I used my dremel to very carefully carve out the inside of the hat to fit it on Hal’s head.
It took me 3 tries to get the hat situated. The first time I realized it was too high, the second time I realized it was cocked too much to the left. The third time was the charm.
Sculpted Boots and Gloves with Aves Fixit Sculpt.
Airbrushed the cape, gloves, belt and boots with FasKolor Blue, brushed it on the hat, mask and feet. I gave the Black Manta chest a base coat of light blue and then painted him with Citadel Enchanted Blue, but I thought it was a little too light, so I painted him again with Model Masters Dark Blue. The Flesh was done as a layer of Citadel Foundation Flesh > a layer of Reaper Tan Flesh > dry-brush of Reaper Tan Flesh Highlight. Reaper Tan Flesh is my favorite flesh tone paint. IMHO, it’s the best looking caucasian flesh tone paint available. BD’s hair was done as a base of Model Masters Black and then a dry-brush of Citadel Brown.
One last bump in the road on the Blue Devil was when I glued the cape on and found out that the ab-crunch swivel was a little too loose and the cape was pulling the upper torso back making it hard to pose him. As you can imagine this caused me no little consternation. There’s nothing worse than putting the finishing touches on a custom just to find out that you have to fix something like that. Luckily I was able to come up with a fix without screwing him up. I slid a small piece of clear rubber band in the left side of the ab-crunch and dripped a little superglue in through the back on both sides and then quickly but gently worked the ab joint so that it wouldn’t freeze up. Once the glue cured, it tightened him up considerably.

Great job! I used a FIRST APPEARENCE JAY GARRICK FLASH head, Clard Kent body and the Question’s hat to make a generic hero… have’nt painted a mask yet, need to buy tighter brush. In order to take place the hat on the head, I boiled the head firest then carved off the top with a steak knife (very carefully) and just used super glue GEL to put the hat on. check my customs on FACEBOOK..
