Hasbro held their G.I. Joe panel at San Diego Comic-Con on Thursday. Unfortunately, for those of you hoping for some new toy news, there was none to be had. Instead, Hasbro used the opportunity to showcase the new G.I. Joe Renegades animated feature that will appear on its upcoming HUB network.
Here’s a video of the teaser trailer shot by TFW2005.
The show will take a Year One approach with the Joes. In it, Cobra is a legitimate corporation with nefarious intentions. We’ll see the formation of the Joes, who try to infiltrate Cobra but get mistakenly labeled as terrorists instead – hence the Renegades name. While the show will keep younger viewers in mind (I read that as no excessive violence) the creators also want to target the show to lifelong fans of the property, so we’ll see a more intelligent show that keeps adult viewers in mind. They say it will be character driven, with continuity maintained throughout the show, e.g., if someone gets injured, they’ll still be injured in the next show.
Heard on the floor: I’m not sure how big of a grain of salt to take with this, but the buzz on the show floor is that Hasbro had planned to also talk about the toy line for Renegades at the panel, but that executives put the kibosh on it in the moments leading up to the panel. The rumored reason – because there’s a lot of uncertainty with regards to Joe toys after the performance of the Rise of Cobra figures. I think we’re talking about a boulder-sized grain of salt here.
