Who’s the cosmic powered cat with the pointed fin on his hat? STARMAN! Can ya dig it?
Who’s the Golden Age dude that’s never ever rude? STARMAN! You damn right!
Who’s the DCUC 15 guy with the soulful blue eyes? STARMAN! Right on!
They say this cat Starman is available at Kma- HUSH YO MOUTH!
I’m just talkin’ ’bout Starman. THEN WE CAN DIG IT!
Here he is, the other half of DC Universe Classics Wave 15 50/50 variant, the original, Christmas color clad, JSAer, Ted Knight – Starman! Boo-yah! Your classic Justice Society of America display will be another huge step closer to completion! A big shout out to my good buddy, Xavion2004, who hooked me up with my GA Starman. Ya see, Xavion2004 is a huge GA Starman fan and felt it was his sacred duty to make sure that this version of Starman was also a part of my collection so that I could proclaim the glory of the Opal City crusader here on AFP! Now that’s a fan.
Starman uses the slimmer build buck (body) as found on Flash, Green Lantern (Hal), Black Manta and The Spectre, to name a few. Another interesting bit of re-use are the Superman boots. Guess those were all the rage in the 40’s? A nice touch is that he’s sporting sculpted bare hands instead of the old gloved hands molded with flesh tone tinted plastic. Should note that Jack Knight has the same meat hooks as well. The cape is light and thin like we all wish Batman’s and Superman’s capes were and is adorned with a sharply painted, yellow star. Unfortunately mine also came with some chalky smudges at no extra charge.
Those sticklers for detail, the Horsemen also outfitted Starman with his Cosmic Rod (of course), ray gun and holster. I swear I thought the holster was for the Cosmic Rod, but then it’s not like I’ve read many Golden Age Starman stories. The holster for the ray gun is well made and works perfect. When I see this style of holster I’m always afraid that the first time you open it the latch pin will rip off or that once unlatched, the flap isn’t going to button back down but this one works great and doesn’t feel fragile. I do wish the pistol grip and Cosmic Rod were a little thicker as Ted holds both of those very loosely. One thing that is lacking is somewhere on his belt to stash his Cosmic Rod like Mr. Miracle has for his Mother Box.
The face on Starman is so lifelike it’s scary. It reminds me of someone but I’m having a hard time putting a name with the face.
Overall, I have to say the GA Starman is a solid figure. He may come across a little campy or dated at first glance, but when you take the time to check out his details, you discover there’s a bit more going on with him than just a vigilante so bad ass, he goes out to fight crime dressed like a Yuletide Buck Rogers! 😛
If you haven’t seen them, please, please, please check out the previous AFP reviews for DC Universe Classics 15 Raven (courtesy of Sandman21xxii), Jack Knight – Starman, Jemm, Sinestro Corps Batman, OMAC and my own Raven write up. Next up is the big green wonder from Mars and then there’s still Validus!
Did you use the ole’ heat, re-shape, & cool technique on his right hand? I was just wondering, since he holds the Cosmic Rod so loosely in that hand. I was wondering if it works. I was thinking about trying that method on my Starman figure.
Nice. Love the JSA pic!
@ wally2974 – no I haven’t. not sure how well it would work as I’ve never tried it.
@ PBJMan – thanx, Bro!
Great pics and review! I unfortunatly have loose hand and Hip freeze on my Starman 🙁
I tried the hot water, re-shape, & cold water trick on Ted’s right hand and I think it works quite well. It becomes very pliable in the hot water. I was able to make his hand into a tighter grip, closer a fist shape. Now, he holds the Cosmic Rod & the gun much better. I suggest you try it for yourself, Buzzy.
