I absolutely love my Art Asylum Star Trek figures, so I am glad to see Diamond Select Toys bringing Trek back to stores next year. DST borrows part of its playbook for its successful Marvel Select line – it will have Select-style packaging and diorama pieces, and will be available in comic book shops and online retailers. However, in place of some points of articulation, they’ve opted for interchangeable body parts. The first figure, Mr. Spock, will come with alternate head, hands, and a swap-outs for standing and crouching legs.
Although James T. Kirk is the next Select figure in line, with their claim to bring us characters from across the Trek universe, I suspect DST will look beyond the original series for character selection. We’ll see if they can work their way up to Marvel Select’s frequency of one figure a month. I just hope they eventually get to Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Janice Rand.
Star Trek Select is the Next Generation of Trek Collectibles!
For years, Star Trek fans have repeatedly opened hailing frequencies, demanding the return of 7-inch Star Trek figures — well, Diamond Select has heard their transmissions! This winter, DST plans to release the first in a line of Star Trek Select figures, depicting iconic characters from across the Star Trek universe in the 7-inch scale fans have asked for. Each figure will come in DST’s famous Select packaging, and will include a diorama-style display base as well as interchangeable parts to recreate scenes using that diorama. And the first release in the line is the most iconic Star Trek character of all, Mr. Spock!
Depicting Mr. Spock as he appears in the classic episode “Devil in the Dark,” this figure includes a cave diorama with a Horta alien — the first Horta toy ever made! Spock himself will have interchangeable legs for standing or crouching poses, and interchangeable hands to hold a phaser or establish a mental link with the Horta. He even comes with an alternate screaming head! The figure will be available in early 2013, and will be followed by James T. Kirk, as well as numerous other important and fan-requested characters from the Star Trek diaspora. The Marvel Select line celebrates its 10th anniversary this year, so here’s to (at least) ten years of Trek Select!

No hip or knee joints?
nope – just interchangeable legs for standing or crouching.
Man, that Horta doesn’t look very articulated at all…
Any idea if TRU will be carrying these figures? I’m not yet sure if I’ll get Spock. On one hand Devil in the Dark is one of my favorite episodes, but if I get Spock, I’ll have to get Kirk too. When the inevitably do McCoy, he’ll be a must for me. I’ll also most likely get Scotty. Which if I have Spock, Kirk, and McCoy…I would be tempted to get the rest of the main crew too (which is something I’m kinda hoping to avoid, lol). If they actually do Chapel I would consider getting her. She’d go nicely with McCoy.
DST has said they’re following the Marvel Select plan, so I think that means it’ll be your local comic book shops and the online retailers. the earlier figures from Art Asylum are really great – if these are comparable then I think you might end up on that slippery slope starting with one and then getting the main crew as they come out – but you’ll be happy about it! 😀
Well, TRU’s sell the Marvel Select figures, so I was assuming they would also sell these. I just haven’t seen any actual word as to whether or not they actually would be. There aren’t any comic book shops around here worth going to, and I prefer not to buy stuff of the net. Especially in the case of something I plan on displaying. So if TRU doesn’t carry the line, I most likely won’t be getting into it at all. As for being happy while getting the entire main crew…if this line of figures was all that I would be collecting, yeah I’d be happy, but as-is I’d be much happier with my favorites and a select few of others to go along with them.
I’m kinda hoping they do movie figures in this line. Scotty is one of my two favorite OS characters, but if I was going to get a figure of him, I would prefer a movie Scotty. He became so much more…interesting in the movies than he ever was in the show. Have him wearing that vest he at times wore, and maybe even have the display be based on the tank he was constructing in IV.
