We’re in the waning hours of the Masters of the Universe Classics Castle Grayskull pre-order, approaching the end of day cut-off to hit the pre-order minimum. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that Mattel will move forward with Castle Grayskull, even if the pre-order minimum is not hit by the end of today.
Before I get to that, I think there’s a pretty good chance that the last-minute push for the Castle will get us over the top. And that’s the genius of using the decidedly collector-unfriendly sales technique of the thermometer. Some folks worried about hitting the goal will be putting in another order or two. Procrastinators are getting reminded that today’s the last day. And folks are rallying their friends and fellow collectors to support this once in a lifetime collectible.
But even if the target isn’t hit, it will go forward anyways. First, with how close it is now, it’s a matter of time before the minimum does get hit. There’s still a month and a half to pick up stragglers. Second, Mattel would get to be the good guy here. I can see them saying “Sure, we didn’t hit the minimum, but we wanted to do something for the Masters collectors out there!” And finally, the Mattel team has too much invested, and they sure as heck want the Castle for their own collections.
So rest assured, tomorrow the pre-order page will still be there, and we’ll get the happy announcement from Toy Guru that we’re getting Castle Grayskull made, whether we made the minimum or not. I’m so sure of it that I won’t be putting in my order until tomorrow.
(If you don’t want to risk it, you can pre-order here: Castle Grayskull® – $250. Just do it before Midnight PST tonight!)
I really didn’t want to commit 250$ to this toy but I also didn’t want to be the one who didn’t preorder and ruined it for everyone. The thermometer was nowhere near the goal at 11pm last night. I could preorder it and when it didn’t make it I’d have a clean conscience. But no, it’s way

@ayeffkay – I’d point and laugh and call you a sucker, but what you did is exactly what Mattel is going for with their thermometer sales. I think a lot of people would be happier with their purchases if they weren’t guilted or scared into making them. I really don’t like the backwards notion of having to buy in to make Mattel’s product a guaranteed success. seems like they should make the product good enough so that I’ll want to buy it.
I stuck to my guns and waited to order until today, but I do admit having pangs of guilt as I thought about the remote possibility that the pre-order didn’t go through.
