I know. If you collect Marvel Legends you’ve already got a metric ton of Captain America figures – but it’s Memorial Day, and instead of coming up with original content for you, I’ve been thinking about friends and relatives who’ve served their countries. But back to the subject at hand – as I considered each of these versions of Cap, I found it interesting that they’ve all got guns. When I was a kid, Cap was the Boy Scout on the Marvel side like Superman was at DC Comics. While Steve Rogers could use the shield as a weapon, its first use was always as a defense for Cap and his allies.

I suppose US Agent started the trend with a grittier (then crazy, then normal again) Captain America, but the move to a more aggressive Cap continued with the Ultimates. Then when Marvel rebooted Bucky, it distinguished his Captain America with the bionic arm (the reason he can handle the shield) and guns. But I found it most interesting that when Steve Rogers returned from the “dead” that he also used firearms in his Super Soldier character.
Now that Steve Rogers is back in the Captain America role, he’s given up the guns – but he’s in a new costume for Marvel Now! I wonder how soon we’ll be getting this version in Marvel Legends. I’m sure Iron Man in his new suit is a lock, and hopefully a new Marvel Now Thor would round out the Big Three Avengers.
In any case, Happy Memorial Day!
