Q: What’s Better Than Storing Your Action Figures in Big Plastic Tubs?

A: Actually having space to display them! 😀

A couple of days ago, I was lamenting having to move all of the action figures I had, not because we were moving, but because we had decided to install new carpeting. A few of them were on display in a small bookshelf that was mostly filled with books, and the balance were stored in big plastic tubs that I used to call “Staging Area One.” The carpet went in earlier this week, and I’ve been spending the last couple of days setting up the new display.

We got rid of the old bookshelf and added more shelving cubes. In all, there are forty-nine 1-foot square cubes, and I’ve got figures in thirty-one of them, and extra figures and customizing supplies in fourteen more. I’d guess I’ve got at least five times more display space than I used to.

Q: What’s Worse for an Action Figure Collector than Moving?

A: Installing new carpet.

If you’ve noticed that I haven’t been putting up as many reviews / pictorials recently, it’s because we’ve been getting ready to put new carpeting in the house. To make a long story short, a leak in one of the bathrooms became the impetus to do a mini-remodeling of the bathrooms and bedrooms.  There goes the action figure budget – I guess I should cancel my eBay bids for a Hot Toys Iron Man Mark III.

Both my wife and I are collectors (maybe the better term is “packrats”), so the house is filled with crap that we should have probably thrown out years ago. For example, I had three stacks of carded figures piled as tall as my wife behind one of the bedroom doors – those stacks were affectionately known as “Staging Area Two” because I bought all of it as trade fodder over the years.

What’s worse is that right before we discovered the leak, I had just set up new shelving cubes in what was once known as “Staging Area One” – the pile of plastic storage bins where I kept loose figures and customizing fodder. My wife had finally had enough of my whining about not having enough shelf space that she devised a new setup for that space, and I had gotten partway through planning and setting up my display. I had to box up a whole bunch of loose figures and customs that were already in disarray to begin with.

The upside – before we move it all back in, I’ll pick out some more figures to put in the Free Stuff pile!

DC Universe Classics Wave 9 Guardian and Wave 10 Forager

DC Universe Classics - Wave 9 Guardian and Wave 10 Forager
DC Universe Classics - Wave 9 Guardian and Wave 10 Forager

I am so psyched to have Forager gracing my Cosmic Cube (my affectionate nickname for my Cosmic Odyssey shelf) that I almost titled this article “Forager and another guy with a shield” – but that would be a huge disservice to comic fans who have been anticipating more classic comic characters in DC Universe Classics.  Yes, they both have shields, but what makes this pairing special is that both the wave 9 Guardian and wave 10 Forager are creations of the great pairing of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon.  These two also created another guy with a shield you may have heard of – Marvel’s Captain America.

A ginormous thank you to VeeBee of the Fwoosh (who omitted Forager from his First Look at DCUC wave 10 so I could have him) and Mattel for making this review possible.

Masters of the Universe Classics Tri-Klops

Masters of the Universe Classics Tri-Klops

Every time I get a new Masters of the Universe Classics figure, I contemplate whether I should even do a review.  VeeBee at the Fwoosh did an awesome First Look when he got Tri-Klops about a month ago.  And it’s always the case that by the time I receive my figure purchase from Mattycollector.com that said figure is sold out.

But hey, this is Tri-Klops we’re talking about!  He was one of my favorite figures in the 200x relaunch of Masters, so I feel compelled.

Marvel Legends – Nemesis Wave

Marvel Legends Nemesis Wave - Nova, Tigra, Black Bolt, Nemesis (BAF), Daredevil, and Beast
Marvel Legends Nemesis Wave - Nova, Tigra, Black Bolt, Nemesis (BAF), Daredevil, and Beast

Before I get started, yes, I know that there’s no Punisher here.  Since the Marvel Legends Nemesis wave is a Wal-Mart exclusive, I had to rely on the kindness of others to get these figures.  It started wayyyyy back when this wave started hitting in Canada – I thought they’d be hitting the US with haste, and when they didn’t, it was too late to nab a set.  Some smart people did, and I was the beneficiary of the heavy packing of Punisher and Daredevil, and their variants – a friend passed along their extra Build-A-Figure pieces for Nemesis (nee Holocaust).

When this wave recently started hitting Wal-Marts in the US, I again relied on friends to fill out the wave.  But since I already had the BAF piece, and because I already had the perfect Punisher (a combination of Toy Biz’s ML 4 and Face-Off, by Joshua Izzo), I passed on him.  So, this pictorial is brought to you by kickass Fwooshers Simun, DisThunder, and ActorJez – thanks very much, guys!
