NYCC 2013: Mattel DC Comics Multiverse – Batman and Superman Movies Wave

NYCC 2013 - Mattel DC Multiverse - Movie Wave (3 of 26)

For as long as there’s been Batman and Superman figures, collectors have been asking for figures from the classic Michael Keaton Batman and Christopher Reeve Superman films. After the Nolan-verse Batman and Man of Steel Movie Masters, I know collectors were hoping for the expansion of that line, and were further encouraged by the Batman 1966 Classic TV Series figures.

So you can imagine my surprise when Mattel decided to introduce from the Keaton and Reeve movies, but choose to do it in the DC Comics Multiverse 3.75-inch line. And while I think generally speaking, the figures look decent for ones in the small scale, I struggle to shake off the notion that this is not a friendly move towards collectors who supported the movie and TV figures in the existing 6-inch scale.

NYCC 2013: Hasbro Star Wars Black Series Reveals

Hasbro NYCC Star Wars Black Series Reveals

By the time we arrived at the Hasbro “Night Before” party, any traces of 6-inch Star Wars Black Series figures vaporized. Luckily, Hasbro shared official images of the Episode 3 Anakin Skywalker figure (so angry!) as well as ones for the 3.75-inchers that were there.

Not being a big fan of the Prequels, I was more excited about the Han Solo figure from the Star Wars Black Series wave 2 that was in our goodie bag. Thanks again, Hasbro!

At the “Night Before” party, Hasbro also pulled out the stops for the merchandise for The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which opens in May. If conventional wisdom holds, that means a street date for the toys in the February time-frame.

Like the Captain America figures, Marvel Spider-Man Legends Infinite Series (still a tongue-twister) will feature a build-a-figure – the Ultimate Green Goblin – also split over two waves. Following the pattern, Hasbro also plans swap-outs for figures – Carnage, Black Cat, and Beetle are the swaps in the first wave, for the 2 Spideys and Electro. Hopefully this works better for the movie-themed waves than they did for the latter ML waves from this year.

We published some Instapics from the Hasbro shindig on the eve of NYCC, and they were kind enough to follow up with official press pictures. To kick us off, here’s the info on the upcoming products from Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which should hit shelves in January, a quarter before the April opening of the movie.

I’m most excited to see the Marvel Legends products, which are rebranded to the movies this year. So: Marvel Captain America Infinite Series 6-Inch Legends. That may not roll of the tongue like Marvel Legends does, but if it gets more product to shelves and in our hands, then I’m all for it.

The back of the packaging (see the Instapics) shows the Mandroid BAF plus army builders / villains to encourage multiple purchases. The first wave includes a Marvel Now! Captain America, Agents of HYDRA (Red Skull / Hydra Agent swap) and Soldiers of AIM (Baron Zemo / AIM Soldier swap). Can’t wait!
