Remembering Eddie Wires – TheFwoosh.com

I was very sad to hear about the passing of Eddie Wires earlier this week. The staff of the Fwoosh put together a small article with our remembrances of Eddie. Some of us had just seen him a few weeks back, during San Diego Comic-Con. Eddie – we’ll miss you.

If you’re an action figure fan, chances are you’ve got a toy on your shelf that Eddie Wires helped create. Some of you probably have shelves full of toys Eddie had a hand in. After Eddie was done painting a prototype, that figure was the best it would ever look and the best it would ever be. That’s because no factory production process could ever hope to match what he created by hand.

I wasn’t lucky enough to spend a lot of time with Eddie, but it seemed to me that he had the same effect on the people around him as he did on the toys he created – life was better when he was there. Always friendly, always smiling, and it was certainly infectious.

If you look through his body of work (see his online portfolio or his Facebook albums), like I do from time to time, you’ll be reminded of what might have been in the world of toys. With him gone, I’ll ask myself that every time I see a painted prototype, and every time I’m outside on the balcony at Jolt’n Joes.

San Diego Comic-Con Most Wanted – SamuRon

Wow, is it that time already? The biggest pop culture event of the year is upon us, and I’m just not ready for it.

Thankfully, the rest of the guys have already covered the bulk of my Most Wanted list, so check out their pre-game shows: Buzzy, Sandman, and Talyn. Here’s some of the upcoming toy lines from my favorite toy companies that somehow didn’t already get mentioned:

DC Universe Mez-Itz (Mezco)

As far as I’m concerned, there’s been a hole in the urban vinyl category shaped like a big “DC” – ever since Hasbro took vinyl and brought it to mass market as Mighty Muggs for its Marvel, Star Wars, GI Joe, and Transformers licenses, I’ve been waiting for DC to follow suit. I thought last year we might get a line from Mattel – they had some protos on display for Masters of the Universe and others that never made it to toy shelves. And DC Direct’s Blammoids made it to comic book stores but just aren’t my cup of tea.

With DC going with Mez-Itz, I think we’ve finally got a chance for DC urban vinyl for mass market. Mez-Itz has a very pleasing form factor that’s scale compatible with Mighty Muggs. And they’ve got those ball-jointed necks, that make them a superior offering. I can’t wait to pick up the Batman / Joker exclusive, and see what else Mezco has planned.

Art Asylum Announces Star Trek TOS Series 5… Kind Of

This is probably going to be somewhat of a disappointment to long-time fans of Art Asylum’s Star Trek action figures from the original series. Series 5 was originally slated to include only one of the figures that eventually made it – the Kirk in dress shirt. Missing are Bones in his short-sleeve Sick Bay uniform, and completely new figures for fan favorites Yeoman Janice Rand and Nurse Chapel. The first hints that these figures were at risk of not making it to shelves was in DST’s shipping update from last October. And check the pic of the card back – the original lineup is still there. Tease!

On the upside, the line has been lacking in the villain department, and now we’ll get a Romulan to join Kang the Klingon from Series 3 last year. I’m still seeing lots of remnants of Kirk and Spock from that series at the local TRUs, so I’ve got to wonder how adding what will likely be another Kirk-heavy series will help us get more Trek to shelves.

Star Trek… the Series 5!

Just when you thought we didn’t have any more Original Series figures up our sleeves!

Surprise! Series 5 is coming out!

What does it contain exactly?

Star Trek The Original Series: Series 5 is made of 3 very important characters:

  1. Of course we have our faithful leader, Captain James T. Kirk. But have you seen him in his Green Dress Shirt? Very respectable!
  2. And what about Scotty? No collection is complete without him, you just cannot do it! It’s not enough power!
  3. And finally, Romulan… Hmm… he looks an awlful lot like a Vulcan… could it be coincidence? Or a common ancestry?

Look for it in stores!

Battlestar Galactica Cylon Two-Pack Packaged Pics

Diamond Select Toys hasn’t updated its shipping list in a while, but this Cylon 2-pack was originally expected back in April, not long after Talyn reviewed the TRU exclusive BSG Stealth Cylon, which is getting a redeco for this set. I suspect this will be good for BSG army builders.

There’s a fair amount of folks that I know that have recommended the TV series to me, but I haven’t given it a shot yet. Should I?
