SDCC 2014: Mezco Returns with One:12 Collective Super-Articulated Action Figures

SDCC 2014 - Mezco One 12 Collective Dark Knight Returns

Mezco is my early pick for best in show, with its 1/12 scale, super-articulated action figures. The first figures planned for the multi-license line will be three versions of Batman from Frank Miller’s Dark Knight Returns. Mez was particularly excited to get to make the DKR Bats, which has cloth apps in the 6-inch scale, allowing the line to sail through some crowded licensing waters.

The Batman Dark Knight Returns figures on display are factory samples, so they’re looking pretty good. Mez says there’s still some paint tweaks to be done. With the complexity of the line (around 32 points of articulation with cloth apps in this scale), they’re hoping to get the figures out by 4th quarter this year. Next year, they’re hoping for a figure every other month or so. This will span licenses, which (spoiler) will include Judge Dredd with his Lawmaster… Sign me up!

Bandai S.H.Figuarts Makes Batman and Joker from Injustice Look Awesome

Remember when Mattel started adding figures from Injustice to their Batman and DC Unlimited lines (the “successors” to DC Universe Classics)? As the figures arrived on shelves, I remember thinking how awful the costume designs were. Having never played the Injustice: Gods Among Us video game, maybe my opinion was uninformed. And now, these upcoming Batman and Joker figures from Bandai in their S.H. Figuarts line, I’m loving the Injustice looks.

Maybe it’s just the execution that counts. The Mattel figures looked horrible and stiff – these look gorgeous and look like they’ll move even better. Granted, the Batman design is for an alternate Injustice costume. And Mattel’s price was under $20, while these are listed at nearly $60 – more than the price I usually see for Figuarts. Still, when the pre-orders show up, I’ll be hard-pressed to resist. These are slated to arrive in December.

SDCC 2014: Square Enix Play Arts Kai Arkham Origins Batman Available to Pre-Order

Square Enix’s Play Arts Kai lines have been favorites of mine for some time, and I’ve been a big fan of their figures from the Batman series of figures that started with Batman: Arkham Asylum. We’re now up to Arkham Origins, and for San Diego Comic-Con this year, Square Enix has an exclusive color variant of Batman.

There’s been some price creep over the past couple years (like with most action figures), to the point where these seem a bit out of reach. At $99, this would be the most expensive Play Arts Kai figure I’ve picked up. The run is limited to one thousand pieces, half of which are available to pre-order at the Square Enix site.

This will likely be a fast sell-out, so pre-ordering may be key. Happy shopping!
