DC unleashed a plethora of announcements today. They include New 52 Figure two-Packs of Flash & Vibe and Wonder Woman & Katana, each priced at $34.99 ($5 off the MSRP), as well as a single Martian Manhunter figure at $21.99 ($3 off the MSRP). Ashley Wood Answers our Top Questions about the ThreeA Toys and Marvel Collaboration

It’s no secret – I am tremendously excited for (and a little scared of) the collaboration that 3A Toys announced with Marvel Comics on Friday. My re-entry point for toy collecting started with 6-inch Marvel Legends, but 1/6 scale figures have started to break my toy budget wide open – Hot Toys and 3A Toys are the main culprits. With the Marvel movies, Hot Toys might as well take my ATM card and PIN, and now 3A Toys will threaten to do that with its re-imagined comic book figures.

Fans of 3A know that they’ve got a very unique style – for those of us with mainstream taste, this combination with Marvel might seem odd. That’s one of the things on my mind as I reach out to Ashley Wood. Ash is the artist and design force behind 3A Toys. I’m sure there’s many more questions, but I wanted to know what Ash thinks of when he thinks Marvel, and how that’s influencing the Marvel figures 3A is making.

AFP: What were some of the Marvel Comics you first read? Have any personal favorite books, teams, or eras of comics? What books are you reading today?

Ashley Wood: I always enjoyed the Avengers, Spider-Man, Iron Fist, Marvel Team-Up, the X-men, Captain America, Tomb of Dracula, Daredevil and so on. The late 70’s to mid to late 80’s are my personal golden period. But I’m very fond of the Tales of Suspense with Kirby Captain America stories in them. I kinda collect the trades from that personal golden period now, but that’s mainly due to not visiting comic shops like I once did and not knowing what the great titles are.

The upcoming “Lone Ranger” film has a number of figures on the way; 1/4 Scale figures of the Lone Ranger and Tonto at $84.99 each, 7″ Head Knockers of the Lone Ranger and Tonto at $19.99 each, and 7″ Figures, with a Set of the Lone Ranger and Tonto at $36.99 or the Case of 8 figures (breakdown unknown) at $134.99, $35 off the MSRP. Kitai from “After Earth” will soon be available as a 7″ Scale action figure, priced at $18.99. The second line of 6″ figures from the KickAss series come from “KickAss 2″, and the assortment includes KickAss, Hit Girl and MF-er. Hasbro Marvel Legends 2013 Wave 1 – Group Shot and Packaged Pics

Marvel Legends 2013 is here, and with your indulgence, I’m going to drop the “(Return of)” label – while the Build-A-Figure has shrunk to mini-proportions, the figures are exceptional. Dare I say that we’re seeing Legends at its best ever?

I’m hard-pressed to come up with a former Legends wave as good as this. Sure, we’ve got extensive re-use, including two completely recycled figures in Wolverine and Archangel (from the most excellent San Diego Comic-Con Uncanny X-Force exclusive 3-pack), but the new decos are awesome on two already great figures. We’ve also got the introduction of two new brawler bodies in Hyperion and Red She-Hulk – my first impressions on both are really favorable. With Ultimate Cap and Protector, we’re getting re-used bodies with some nice add-on parts to make them unique. Of the bunch, Protector is the low point for me, mostly because I’m not a fan of the costume.

And Hit Monkey? For a mini-BAF, he’s pretty damn cool. As a smaller figure, he’s got a couple fewer points of articulation, but you’d hardly notice it – he can hold lots of very dynamic poses. He’s got the new ankles, giving him a lot wider range of stable positions. I think you’ll like the Hit Monkey mini-BAF, even if you hate the character (because he’s the product of hack writer Daniel Way.)
