Is DC Universe Classics Wave 18 the “Super Friends Diversity” Wave?

Back in September, rumored line-ups of DC Universe Classics Wave 17 (the “Rainbow Lantern” wave) hit the internet. And right on time, we’re now starting to hear buzz about Wave 18.

According to a post on Raving Toy Maniac’s Toy Buzz, wave 18 will consist of:

  • Samurai
  • Superman & Bizarro (interchangeable head and hands)
  • Manhunter
  • Black Vulcan
  • Metallo
  • El Dorado
  • C&C: Apache Chief

What makes this alleged line-up interesting is that six of the characters (the ones in bold) were on the SuperFriends cartoon back in the 80’s, including the cartoon-only characters that Hanna Barbera added supposedly to give the character lineup some color. While this line-up would be a blow to those Classics fans that believe the line should be limited to characters that have appeared in the comics, Mattel already crossed that bridge when they made the Wonder Twins the San Diego Comic-Con exclusive figures in 2008 – ok, technically it was Gleek who was the exclusive. And while some will argue that Zan and Jayna did appear in the Teen Titans comic briefly, their figures were definitely based on their appearance in the cartoon.

DC Universe Classics Wave 16 Carded Pics

Mattel has posted carded pics of DC Universe Classics wave 16 on their Facebook page. And even though I’ve already got an awesome custom of the Riddler from Buzzy, I think this new one is gonna be great too. Jonah Hex and Robin are also most wanted figures for me.

AFP Ask Matty Round-Up for 12/1/10

The crew from Mattel is back with another edition of Ask Matty. Our thanks to Toy Guru and the gang!

1) This may be a question for the Four Horsemen – what’s desired for the DC Universe Classics line for head size? Some of the early figures had heads on the smaller size, like Batman and Aquaman, while some of the more recent figures seem to have oversized heads, like Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, and OMAC. Is this an intentional move to make the heads bigger?

Sometimes it is intentional, based on character; sometimes it is due to tooling issues. We do strive for consistency but it is not a perfect world and sometimes not everything comes out the way design wants. In some cases, like with the corrected height Sinestro coming to TRU next month, we try to fix things when we can!
