San Diego Comic-Con 2010 – DC Direct

DC Direct (1200x900).jpg

We also hit DC Direct on Preview Night – our focus was mainly on the Batman: Arkham Asylum and Green Lantern-oriented figures. Lanterns will continue to be a strong theme for DCD, and we’ll have to go back to get a look at their non-figure oriented stuff – lots of cool rings and lantern pieces to be had.

But for now, let’s start with the figures, and the line I’ve been itching to see up close.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Seeing these up close, I’m really impressed how they leveraged the 3d assets from game development to produce some extremely detailed sculpts. I’m hard pressed to pick a standout here, but I think Harley takes it. The articulation, as you might expect, is limited by today’s super-articulated standards, and both versions of Batman are the low points for me.

San Diego Comic-Con 2010 – Mattel DC Universe Classics

DC Universe Classics (2) (1200x674).jpg

San Diego Comic-Con’s Preview Night seems to be just as crowded as a weekend at the Con, but we took time to admire the DC Universe Classics figures on display. The showcase was a diorama of the Hall of Justice, with the heroes on the right and the villains on the left.

In the display area, they had four groups of figures on display:

  • DC Universe Classics Wave 14
  • DC Universe Classics Wave 15
  • The Green Lantern 5-Pack and Kyle Rayner
  • All-Star Repaints

San Diego Comic-Con Most Wanted – SamuRon

Wow, is it that time already? The biggest pop culture event of the year is upon us, and I’m just not ready for it.

Thankfully, the rest of the guys have already covered the bulk of my Most Wanted list, so check out their pre-game shows: Buzzy, Sandman, and Talyn. Here’s some of the upcoming toy lines from my favorite toy companies that somehow didn’t already get mentioned:

DC Universe Mez-Itz (Mezco)

As far as I’m concerned, there’s been a hole in the urban vinyl category shaped like a big “DC” – ever since Hasbro took vinyl and brought it to mass market as Mighty Muggs for its Marvel, Star Wars, GI Joe, and Transformers licenses, I’ve been waiting for DC to follow suit. I thought last year we might get a line from Mattel – they had some protos on display for Masters of the Universe and others that never made it to toy shelves. And DC Direct’s Blammoids made it to comic book stores but just aren’t my cup of tea.

With DC going with Mez-Itz, I think we’ve finally got a chance for DC urban vinyl for mass market. Mez-Itz has a very pleasing form factor that’s scale compatible with Mighty Muggs. And they’ve got those ball-jointed necks, that make them a superior offering. I can’t wait to pick up the Batman / Joker exclusive, and see what else Mezco has planned.

DC Direct August Solicitations

I hope we’ll see a lot of this and more at San Diego Comic-Con. Here’s DC Direct’s August previews for items that will arrive oh so far away, in March next year. If you thought you were going to get some respite from Blackest Night figures, you are – but if the sales do well then we’ll be buried in Brightest Day figures.

UltSwd. GL.SN.jpgULTIMATE SHOWDOWN: GREEN LANTERN VS. SINESTRO STATUE SET

DESIGNED & SCULPTED BY TIM BRUCKNER

The Ultimate Showdown series is DC Direct’s unique, new interactive concept for high-quality collectible statues featuring the world’s greatest heroes and villains squaring off in deadly combat.

Green Lantern delivers a green energy blast to Sinestro, as the Corps’ arch-nemesis burns with yellow fire.

Each character is displayed on a specially designed stand-alone base intended to “interact” with the other statues in the series and to be displayed in a myriad of ways. The statues can pivot independently on their bases and rotate their heads to customize and direct the action. Collect all the other statue sets in the series! Mix and match them to create your own showdown or combine them all in one ultimate battle scene.

These hand-painted, cold-cast porcelain statues measure approximately:

  • Green Lantern: 7.35” high x 4.5” wide x 5.25” deep
  • Sinestro: 8” high x 4.5” wide x 5” deep

Each set is packaged together in a 4-color box.

Limited Edition.

On sale March 16, 2011 * Statue * $175 US

San Diego Comic-Con 2010 Most Wanted – Sandman

The 2010 San Diego Comic-Con is one day away and we’re writing down the things we are looking forward to the most! If you’ve never been to Comic-Con, I have to say it is one of the craziest places to be if you’re a fan of comic books, movies, television and most important to us: TOYS!

In this “Super Bowl” of geekdom, we get a lot of first peeks at various companies’ future toy releases. Here’s what I’m looking forward to seeing!

Masters of the Universe Classics (Mattel)

DSCN3857.JPG

We got a lot of good stuff from this line this year. Last year Battle Cat was the star of the Con for me, as was seeing Teela and Trapjaw. This year they are supposed to show the same amount of figures they showed last year and I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us! I’m hoping to see Man-E-Faces, Panthor, Mantenna and maybe some vehicles!!
