Mattel Announces Retro-Action DC Super Heroes in Mego Style

It’s official – the World’s Greatest Super Heroes have become Retro-Action DC Super Heroes.  The name may be different, but it describes the product better, imho.  And that product hasn’t changed.  It’s still Mego-styled, with Dr. Mego involved in product design, much like the Four Horsemen are involved with DC Universe Classics.

Although I’m probably smack in the middle of the right age group, I don’t feel a lot of nostalgia for Megos, but I do know a lot of collectors who are psyched about this line.  I’m curious to see how this will play at Toys R Us, given their recent moves to make their stores more collector-friendly.

Retro-Action DC Super Heroes Announced!

Hey, Old-School Toy Fans!

If you love those 8″ cloth-style figures from the 1970s and 1980s, we’ve got news that’s going to make you one happy collector…

Mattel has gone back in time for design inspiration and come up with heroes based on the look of those vintage figures for a brand-new line called Retro-Action DC Super Heroes!

Check out these prototype images. You’ll see they’re not recreations, but updates lovingly based on the old style. In some cases, we’re even improving on iconic features for some of your favorite characters, like a more accurate belt buckle for Green Arrow, or an “s” curl in the hair of Superman.

Green Arrow is up first, and he’ll be offered right here at MattyCollector.com on December 15th. This will be followed by a line at Toys “R” Us and select online retailers in the spring.

There will be three waves of four figures in 2010, starting with these characters in Wave 1:

Superman, Sinestro, Lex Luthor, and Green Lantern (Hal Jordan)

So if you haven’t already, register for email from me and I’ll send a sale reminder right to your inbox. You can also follow me at Twitter and I’ll tweet reminders there. Remember, Green Arrow goes on sale Tuesday, December 15th, just in time to purchase as a gift for your favorite collector — you!

DC Universe Classics Wave 11 Goes on Sale at MattyCollector.com on December 23

The first set of DC Universe Classics retail figures will be offered on MattyCollector.com on December 23, not on December 15 with the huge amount of Masters of the Universe Classics, DC Universe, and Ghostbusters products.  Arrival of the product is the culprit, although I suspect some people might be thankful for the short break to let the wallet recuperate.

The Wave 11 figures will *not* be repackaged, so you’ll be getting them on standard cards with the Collect & Connect pieces to build Kilowog.  At eight figures, you’ll have an extra C&C piece from Steppenwolf, and the only figure you’ll be missing is the Deadman variant, with translucent arms and legs and glow in the dark logo and eyes – I didn’t know about the glow in the dark part before this.

At about $15 per figure plus shipping, I have to wonder how this will impact online retailers, many of whom have not received their orders outside of Deadman and The Question.

DCUC Wave 11 coming to MattyCollector.com!

DC Universe Classics Wave 11

Hey toy fans,

So big news! We will indeed be selling our first wave box set of DCUC 6″ figures on Mattycollector.com. This great program will kick off with Wave 11. The box set will include standard carded versions of:

  • John Stewart – with constructs
  • Katma Tui – with constructs
  • Shark
  • The Question – Fan’s choice
  • Deadman (standard version)
  • Cyborg Superman (Sinestro Corps uniform)
  • Steppenwolf Green
  • Steppenwolf Red

Plus with all of these figs you’ll get all the parts needed to make the collect and connect Kilowog (truly one of the coolest Collect and Connect figures we’ve done to date!). While the set will include both variants of Steppenwolf, the variant of Deadman (clear legs and arms, glow in the dark eyes and logo) will be a retail exclusive, so you’ll still need to hunt for this one!

The set will break down to about $15.00 per figure (plus shipping). So for those who asked for better distribution at retail prices – your wish has been answered!

The set goes on sale Dec 23nd, only on MattyCollector.com! (and for those asking why we can’t sell this on Dec 15th with the other Dec product – the answer is simple; this is the soonest the set will arrive at our distribution center. If we pre-sold it on the 15th, it would hold up shipments of any other items you might order and that is the last thing we want!).

The set goes on sale at a special sale December 23rd, only on MattyCollector.com! Stay tuned for more details…

Toyfare 150 to Feature New DC Universe Classics Two-Packs

DC Universe Classics Batman, Robin, Black Manta, and Aquaman
DC Universe Classics Batman, Robin, Black Manta, and Aquaman

DC Universe Classics fans, be sure to pick up Toyfare #150, on sale this Wednesday.  Two-packs may be a thing of the past on MattyCollector.com after the Justice in the Jungle 2-pack, but according to a subscriber who received his issue of Toyfare early, Mattel reveals two new 2-packs that will be exclusive to Wal-Mart.  Sorry, folks who can’t stand Wal-mart exclusives!  As you might expect, the two packs will leverage existing figures, with new decos.

One of the two packs will feature Batman and Robin.  Batman will be in his black and gray costume, but with a black bat symbol and a pouched belt.  Robin, still Tim Drake, will be in his red and green costume, but my understanding is that the original Robin figure will be reused entirely – so there will be some elements, like glove spikes and belt pouches, that won’t be correct for the red and green.

The other two pack will feature Aquaman and his nemesis Black Manta.  Folks who missed on Aquaman early on will be glad to get the opportunity to pick one up now, and will get the added bonus of a metallic orange for his scaly shirt.  Black Manta will also have a blue color scheme instead of the black – but he won’t be changing his name to Blue Manta any time soon. 😉

The issue will also have pictures of DCUC variants or costume accessories from waves 12 and 13, including Mary Batson (nee Marvel), the Spectre, Negative Man, and Cyclotron.  I am also looking forward to seeing more of Mattel’s upcoming WWE line.

First Look – JLU Justice Guild of America – TheFwoosh.com

I know I have at least one reader who has been waiting for the Justice League Unlimited Justice Guild set (hi Emanuel!) – and I’m happy to tell him that even though it hasn’t yet been scheduled for release on MattyCollector.com, if the big sites are getting sets to review then it’ll most likely make it to an order page near you.

Anybody else out there want more JLU?  Leave a comment!  I won’t consider the line done until I have a JLU Jonah Hex in my hands.

Overall, this is a well done set with clean lines and strong plastic set to figures of characters that have been demanded by JLU fans for a long time. Right now, the future of JLU is kind of up in the air in terms of concrete facts. We know that this is the last Matty JLU set that is planned and no official word has been given as to the specifics of 2010 (though there seems to be test shots of guys like Weather Wizard and Livewire popping up on eBay from Honk Kong sellers). So, if you are fan of the line, show your support when this set is released soon. JLU fans have been down this road before, let’s keep this line going!

CustomCon 24 at TheFwoosh.com

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!  No, not the winter holidays – it’s Winter CustomCon, the 24th installment and the third hosted by TheFwoosh.com.

What is CustomCon?

CustomCon is a special presentation of new custom toy creations by customizers around the globe. Eight years in the running, it’s still going strong. Inspired by the presentations of new product by legitimate manufacturers at Toy Fair and other trade shows, CustomCon is a “fake” convention, whereby customizers present their latest creations and recipes as if unveiling a new line of real toys to retailers. It’s always a lot of fun, for both the viewers and the participants.

This special event is running all week, so I’ll try to pick out some of the custom entries that I found really compelling.  Here’s three from day one.
