Toy Fair 2017: Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

What’s clear coming out of this year’s Hasbro Collector Preview is that the Marvel team’s decision to rebrand the Marvel Legends to tie to mass media has been a success. This year, Legends is being driven not only by three movie releases in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but also by its extended TV properties on ABC and Netflix and several animated shows. The result is a healthy line-up that spans mass retail releases and exclusives for both traditional and online specialty retailers.

And what about those properties that still fall outside of Marvel Studios control? Hasbro is still finding a way to leverage them with comics-based figures.

SDCC 2016: Hasbro Marvel Legends Update

SDCC 2016 - Hasbro Marvel Legends Update (57 of 57)

Hasbro may have jump-started SDCC 2016 by revealing the latest figures in the upcoming Marvel Legends Spider-Man and Dr. Strange waves, but they’ve continued to add goodness to their booth display each day. That’s culminated with the official reveals during their panel discussion earlier today.

We’ll have our video of the Hasbro Marvel panel, including the full Q&A, posted some time tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s the latest on what’s coming up for the Marvel Legends 6-inch line in 2017.

Toy Fair 2016: Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

Toy Fair 2016 - Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

In the past, I’d separate the Hasbro Marvel reports into Marvel Legends and everything else. At this Toy Fair, Hasbro has completed the consolidation of all the collector-oriented Marvel lines into the Marvel Legends brand. And while this will certainly cause confusion for non-collectors who shop for their collector loved ones, it’s really a testament to the strength of Legends.

Think back to 2007, when Hasbro first started producing Legends. Back then, it was clear that the star of 6-inch Legends had faded; Hasbro was focusing on their bread and butter 3.75-inch scale. Today, however, it’s 6-inch that is propelling the brand forward. Over 8MM units have been shipped since Hasbro first took over the license. Over 200 figures (many more if you count variants) have been produced.

Deadpool: The Motion Picture – BillsComics.com

Bill’s latest action figure comic is a special one in particular for me. He asked me who my favorite comic book character is – and as you may know, Deadpool is way up there. I went on to tell Bill what I thought would be a great idea for a comic. He came back with Deadpool – The Motion Picture, and generously gave me a “plot by” credit.

This comic book is better than 99% of the comics ever made. And just in case you don’t think so, a year ago I had a fantastic version of this. And it would’ve received great reviews. You’ll probably never see it. That’s reality though. 🙂

Be sure to check out the rest of Bill’s work here at AFP and at Bill’s Comics.
