Hasbro Reveals Two New Disney Exclusive Star Wars Sets for Star Tours

Disney’s acquisition of LucasArts didn’t pique my attention all that much. I think my Star Wars excitement hit its pinnacle when the Original Trilogy was rereleased in theaters in advance of the Prequels – and declined steadily with the release of each subsequent movie. But it’s increasing pretty steadily – the announcement of solo movies on top of Episode VII, the introduction of the Hasbro Star Wars Black Series of 6-inch Star Wars figures, and J.J. Abrams taking the director’s chair has helped a lot.

Not being a 4-inch Star Wars collector, these exclusive sets aren’t on my most wanted list – but I do feel a hankering to ride Star Tours again…

The celebration of the amazing new Star Tours Disney theme park ride continues in 2013 with new STAR WARS Star Tours Action Figure Packs from Hasbro.  Building off of the packs released in 2011, these two sets of figures introduce new Droids from the ride experience as well as a few reprised fan favorites.  New figures include a blue Signal Droid, red RX Droid, a G2 Droid rebuilt from scratch for more accurate detail, and the very first appearance of a new Seeker Droid!

Behind Play Imaginative’s Super Alloy Figures

This is a guest article by Jedd-the-Jedi. Jedd covered the Singapore Toy, Games, and Comic Convention for AFP and is based in Singapore.

This handsome-looking fellow is a Super Alloy Batman from Play Imaginative, and designed by Jim Lee. Before its release, few had heard of the Singaporean company, and to toy collectors in Singapore it is quite a big deal that a local company has managed to snag the rights to produce action figures of Marvel and DC characters. The exclusive figure was unveiled back at the Singapore Toy Games and Comics Convention (STGCC) in September, and is currently available over at Big Bad Toy Store.

Singaporean newspaper The Straits Times ran an article about Play Imaginative on Sunday, with interviews with the company’s two founders. Play Imaginative approached DC Comics in 2011 to obtain the licensing rights to create a 12-inch tall Batman action figure, which they were granted after DC saw and approved of the prototype made mostly of die-cast metal. The company is currently working on Super Alloy figures of Superman, Green Lantern and a new Batman. They’ve also signed a deal last December with Marvel Comics to make toys based on its movie characters, and a Super Alloy Iron Man coming out in March 2013 is the next release.

Toy Fair 2013: Playmates Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

Playmates Nickelodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (16 of 25)

Toy Fair 2013: Hasbro Star Wars Black Series (6-inch)

I couldn’t rightly go to sleep tonight without posting about the recently announced Star Wars Black Series. With their announcement of the new 6-inch line, Hasbro had highlighted one of the figures in the first wave of four – the X-Wing Luke Skywalker. The Star Wars team spent some time talking about the genesis of the line – they wanted to create a line of figures that recalled specific scenes from the movies – ones that would be iconic and instantly recognizable to fans. For Luke, that meant poring over tons of reference and agonizing over details as specific as clothing folds.

That attention to detail, with partner Gentle Giant, as paid off, as Hasbro showed off the rest of the first wave – R2-D2, the Sand Trooper, and Darth Maul – and teased the inevitable San Diego Comic-Con exclusive.
