AFP’s Best of 2012 – Sandman’s Picks

Happy New Year everyone! Well, 2012 has come and gone, and like every year, Ron has asked us to pick our own Best of 2012!

I have to say, 2012 was a tough year for toy collecting for me. With prices going up across the board and my wife and I having our first baby this past July, the budget for toys had to be trimmed down. It didn’t help that there were so many awesome toys that came out during this year! Of the toys that I did manage to get, here’s my Top 5 for 2012!

#5 ThreeA Zombs

These guys were actually available for pre-order from ThreeA in November 2011, but since they came out in 2012 they’re on this list! They’re super articulated zombies with different head sculpts and uniforms and they were a hoot to play with! I wish I had an army of these! I also wish I had gotten one of those War Zombs!

ThreeA Toys Fighting JC and the God Squad – Experimenting with RAW and More

Fighting JC 1

For a long time I tried to steer clear of 1/6 scale figures from 3A Toys, for good reason – I knew if I succumbed it would be break the bank. So when the 3AA exclusive for 2012 turned out to be the first 1/6  to be offered with the subscription, I was screwed. After getting the F-Legion figure, I set about picking up the figures I always wanted. Fighting JC from Adventure Kartel was at the top of the list, and I knew I needed a Tommy Mission too. In my version of the 3A-verse, JC, Tommy, and F-Legion form the Zomb-crushing “God Squad.”

The shot above utilizes three LEDs – my two book lights are on the left side in front and behind at ground level. I also just got a new, larger LED task light, which was on sale at Amazon. It’s behind and above on the right. It’s quite a bit stronger, and is a bit cooler, temperature-wise. I’ve always been fortunate to work with matched lights, which makes post-processing a little more simple. Here, I got to see some of the challenges when you don’t have matched lights – this shot required some color correction to take down some yellow, as my camera wasn’t quite sure what to do.

Two Possibilities for Rumored 6-Inch Star Wars Figures – Gentle Giant and ThreeA Toys

Star Wars Legends Conceptual
What if Star Wars figures came out in Marvel Legends scale? – Star Wars Legends Concept Logo (read: fake)

Fans of 6-inch super-articulated figure lines like Marvel Legends and DC Universe Classics have long been hoping for scale-compatible figures from the Star Wars universe. It’s always been long odds, because Hasbro has been reluctant to rock the 3.75-inch boat that’s powered one of their only evergreen licenses. But the wait for 6-inch Star Wars may soon be over, according to this insider rumor posted at Rebelscum.com. Six-inch Star Wars figures may be coming our way, and the big surprise, if it can be believed, is that they won’t be coming to us from Hasbro.

Geoff Beckett of GBJR Toys Wants You to Save Indie Spotlight – Should You?

An old proverb suggests that “If at first you don’t succeed, try, try, try again.” Geoff Beckett of GBJR Toys has certainly taken that to heart. He’s now on his third effort to utilize crowd funding to bring toys to the market. The current campaign to “Save Indie Spotlight” is on GoFundMe with a target of $20K, to be used to “produce a new run of the Series2 Indie Spotlight action figure line.” If the campaign hits $30K, Beckett says he will produce an exclusive online campaign version of the Maxx as one of the campaign rewards. The campaign has been open for over 3 weeks, and in that time it’s managed to raise over $700.

The current line-up for Indie Spotlight Series 2 consists of two versions of Dick Tracy, the Tick, Ignacia from Wildguard, and King Zombie from Deadworld. It omits Jack Staff, who was originally shown in with this line-up back in 2009. The Weird World of Jack Staff Facebook page, which has creator Paul Grist as the contact, claims that the GBJR / Shocker Toys license for Jack Staff expired a few years ago.

Beckett’s two previous crowd funding campaigns from earlier this year did not meet their funding goals. The first campaign was for a line extension of DIY Plush Mallows. It was promoted on Kickstarter this past September, but missed its $9,850 target, raising only $583. The second campaign was taken down prematurely by Indiegogo. GBJR Toys claimed on its Facebook page that it was a victim of malicious lies from multiple sites, including TheFwoosh.com (full disclosure: I am part of the staff at the Fwoosh).
