Mattel Sponsors Masters of the Universe Art Show for Charity During New York Comic Con

Toy Tokyo and its Underground gallery have become a regular stop for me when I’m in NYC. The Four Horsemen have held their Toypocalypse events there the past two Toy Fairs, and now Mattel is using the venue to host a MOTU art show, with the benefits proceeding the Ronald McDonald House.

Toys, Masters of the Universe, and art? I’ll won’t miss it!

Quick Pic – Hulk – the Wal-Mart Face-Off

Here’s a quick pic I took of the two best Hulks I have in my collection – the Wal-Mart exclusive Avengers Hulk and the Marvel Legends Face-Off Hulk. I wanted to frame their silhouettes with light, so I positioned my two LED book lights off to the back and sides of them, so that each light was lighting the back of one figure and the front of the other. I also wanted a little color on both figures instead of completely dark silhouettes, so I used my cheap DIY reflector to bounce just a little light onto them from in front and above them.

I think the Wal-Mart Hulk has got the most effective articulation of any of the Hulks I’ve gotten so far, but I still love the sculpt and texture of the Face-Off Hulk, and I don’t think there will ever be a Hulk that tops the Face-Off Hulk’s head sculpt. Which of these two is your favorite? And if there’s another Hulk that tops your list, who is it?

Manta Raider and One of a Kind Custom Pilot up for Charity Auction at PowerCon

If you liked the final Manta Raider in its packaging that Joe Amaro shared with us yesterday, then you’re going to LOVE the custom Manta Raider pilot by Joe that’s based on Rudy Obrero’s packaging art. I know you wish this bad boy came with the Manta Raider (he doesn’t) – the only way to get this one of a kind figure *and* his Manta Raider is to place the winning bid during the Power-Con / ThunderCon Charity Auction. Joe shares more details:

The auction will take place during the convention on Saturday, September 22 from 4:00pm – 6:00pm. Fifty Percent of the auction’s proceeds will benefit Keep A Child Alive. Keep A Child Alive provides treatment, love, and support to families affected by HIV/AIDS in countries around the world.

This is such a cool auction item – hats off to Joe and Rudy for making this possible! Now get your butts to SoCal and bid!

Manta Raider by Joe Amaro and Rudy Obrero – Very Limited Availability at PowerCon

image

Joe Amaro just sent us a brief update on the Manta Raider. Because these are all handmade, he’s got a very limited number that will be available to purchase at PowerCon. They’ll be available at Rudy’s booth for $50 each, but no pre-order as originally planned. Better make that your first stop!

But not to worry, the rest of the Manta Raiders will be sold online after Power Con to everyone. Rudy has agreed to sign all the back cards so every Manta Raider will come signed, just in case you missed the opportunity at Power Con. That was the main reason I wanted these for Power Con.

Play Imaginative Super Alloy Batman (Special Edition)

I had never heard of Play Imaginative, but was very intrigued when the Super Alloy Batman was announced as an exclusive for the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention that was held at the start of the month. You see, as much as I’ve been a fan of the Nolan-verse Batman and Hot Toys with their 1/6 scale Dark Knight figures, my love of Batman started in the comics. The Super Alloy Batman hits on a sweet spot for me – its design is comics-based, from legendary artist Jim Lee, and it’s super-articulated. Add to that the intriguing notion that much of the figure would be die cast metal, and I was hooked – I had to get one. The big question was, how would it stack up to Hot Toys, who in my view dominates the 1/6 scale for pop culture action figures.
