Last Chance to Kickstart Leaving Megalopolis, an Original Comic Collaboration by Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore

I usually just post about things directly related to action figures, but Gail Simone and Jim Calafiore have been behind so many of the comic books that inspired my customs, many of my favorite customs from others, and some of my biggest action figure wants. I’ve had an on again off again relationship with comics, and when I started reading again after the crap in the 90s, Gail was there with Deadpool and Agency X, and Jim was there with Exiles. And when they collaborated on Secret Six, it was like peanut butter met chocolate.

Their latest collaboration, Leaving Megalopolis, is being funded on Kickstarter – they are essentially self-publishing without the big guys. The project will stop taking backers tomorrow at Noon EST, so don’t miss out on your last chance to contribute – under 12 hours to go!

The Kickstarter community has been extremely gung-ho on the project – Leaving Megalopolis has hit the main funding goal and continues to blow past its stretch goals. Big stretch goals attained so far – upping to 112 pages from the original 80, upgrading to hardcover, and getting Secret Six colorist Jason Wright on board. Jim’s added a couple more stretch targets for the finish line (they’ve already hit the first one, and the last I don’t really think Jim wants to hit), but if you’re a fan of Secret Six or Gail’s and Jim’s other comics, this will almost certainly be an awesome collectible graphic novel for your book shelves.

A couple short goals here at the end that are hopefully attainable.

$111k – A new 6-8 page supplemental story that will be PDF/digital delivery only; every backer $9-PDF level and above will receive this exclusively. And everyone receiving a physical copy of the book gets a full color LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS bookmark.

$120k – Either a second 6-8 page supplemental story, or the first supplement will be expanded to 12-16 pages. PDF/digital delivery only; every backer $9-PDF level and above will receive this exclusively. And everyone receiving a physical copy of the book will get a full color LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS postcard and a full color LEAVING MEGALOPOLIS bookmark.

$150k – Jim will shave his head. (Pretty sure we’re not making this one, –I hope– but if we do, it will be filmed and put up for viewing.) (PS: There’s no allowance here for back-outs and denied credit cards; if my hair is going, it’s at 150k for real)

Best Week Ever (the Toy Version) and the Spread Good Karma Giveaway

I’ve had a really good week (or so) for toys. It started on our anniversary – as a gift, my wife got me the Wal-Mart exclusive Avengers Hulk that has been eluding me for some time. And she didn’t even blink when I told her that I was planning to Frankenstein him with some other Hulks to make the best Hulk ever (maybe some day). And it’s kept going since then:

  • Hasbro Return of Marvel Legends – BigBadToyStore let me know that my pre-order of Wave 3 was in.
  • 3A Toys Action Portable – My most-anticipated figure, the Fighting JC, was announced in 1/12 scale, and on order day I also scored an AP blue-suited Zomb for a great price on eBay and the secret Dark Sarge Zomb on bambalandstore.com, right as the JC sale was closing up.
  • Hot Toys The Dark Knight – I missed out on the pre-order window for the SWAT version of Jim Gordon, but Sideshow just let me know that they found one for me (I had put myself on the wait list).

With all this good stuff happening to me (aside from now being completely broke :)), I figured I should spread the good toy karma around with a Free Stuff giveaway. Here’s what’s up for grabs and how to get up to three chances to win.

STGCC 2012: Hot Toys Batman and The Dark Knight

Jedd-the-Jedi has sent in these Singapore Toy, Games & Comic Convention pics from the Hot Toys Booth.

Here are the Hot Toys pictures of their Batman/The Dark Knight Rises figures. The highlights of this display were definitely the ginormous “The Bat” vehicle and TDKR Catwoman unveiled for the first time. There was also the exclusive SWAT Gordon, and a 14″ scale Ultimate Batman (he’s the one with the loads and loads of accessories). Also making an appearance were the 1989, 1966 and camo Tumbler versions of the Batmobile.

STGCC 2012: Play Imaginative Super Alloy Batman

The Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention opened to the public today, and Jedd-the Jedi has sent in these images from the Play Imaginative booth. Play Imaginative recently announced their Super Alloy line of 1/6 figures – super articulated with a lot of diecast metal. Their first figure is the Jim Lee comic-styled Batman. For STGCC, they have a glossy exclusive that was available for pre-order and on the show floor. The broader release will have a matte finish.

Jedd also let us know that the next Super Alloy release will be the Marvel Iron Man Mark VII armor. Can’t wait to see it!

Jedd-the-Jedi was onsite for us today at the Singapore Toy, Game & Comic Convention’s Press Preview Day, and has sent us some pics!

These are the photos from the press preview today. Most of them are of the three Hot Toys figures. There’s a photo of the exclusive Thundercats Lion-O (Mumm Ra version) as well, and of ZC World’s Vinyl Collectible Astro Boy. Today’s line-up of toys and collectibles is just a teeny tiny sampling of what will be on the show floor when the convention proper takes place over the weekend.

Comic book artist Leinil Yu happens to be a big fan of Hot Toys figures, the first one he bought being an Iron Man 2 War Machine. He told me that he’s thinking of using them as reference material, drawing portraits based on the figures, and was surprised at how articulated the Sucker Punch Baby Doll figure was – you can cock the hip!

Stay tuned for updates from Jedd at STGCC over the next few days.
