Toy Fair 2011 – Hasbro Star Wars Report

I’ve got to get to the Javits Center for the main Toy Fair exhibit and Mattel’s presentation later this afternoon, so I’ll be brief – the Star Wars juggernaut is unstoppable. In 2011, we’ll see more Vintage figures, more Clone Wars, more vehicles, and a transition from Galactic Heroes to Galactic Force (a bigger, articulated figure still aimed at kids).

The big item this year is the Republic Attack Shuttle vehicle / playset, and another big item is a set of 12 Vintage figures plus 2 bonus mini-figures that are branded Revenge of the Jedi.

Toy Fair 2011 – Hasbro GI Joe Report (and Indiana Jones special)

Unfortunately, Joe fans, it sounds like the GI Joe brand is tightening up a little in 2011. The official word is that the line will be more “focused” – my personal take on this is that the Pursuit of Cobra lineup didn’t revive the line enough after the the Rise of Cobra movie figures took a beating at retail.

There is good news on the horizon, though. The GI Joe Renegades show on the Hub has launched, and I think Hasbro has made a good decision that the Renegades figures, which will ship this fall as part of the main line with art from the show to distinguish it, are intended to fit in with the rest of the line. Renegades figures will have deco that matches the show’s color palette, but will leverage the existing Joe tooling with some new Renegades parts.

Toy Fair 2011 – Hasbro Marvel Report – Marvel Legends and Marvel Universe

Marvel Universe Sentinel (1280x853).jpgMarvel Universe (1280x853).jpg

Hasbro held its collector event for the online media outlets – how we qualify for this I’ll never know, but I won’t fight it. It’s a great event that covers all the Hasbro collector-oriented lines, including Star Wars, GI Joes, and Transformers. But my first love is the comic book properties, so I’ll be sharing the pictures and recaps of the Marvel lines first.

First off, let’s start with Marvel Legends. I was a little surprised that they decided to show some items – at least in the slide show. None of what we were shown was available in the showroom, and that’s not surprising since this is 2012 product. And unlike last year, no pictures or video was allowed during the presentation. But, across the board, I can say what was in the slide show looked good.

Toy Fair 2011 – Gothitropolis Dark and Light Talisman Scarabus Exclusive Packaged Pics

Since it’s an industry show, Toy Fair typically isn’t a time that you’d normally be picking up new action figures for your collection – it’s the time you’ll be seeing and hearing about the toys that you will be picking up later in the year.

But at Toypocalypse, the Four Horsemen have made available 100 sets of an exclusive Dark and Light variant set of their upcoming Gothitropolis Scarabus figure. They’re available for $50 each (so, $100 for a set of the black and white figures), and come in resealable packaging. I didn’t get the chance to find out what will be different about the 100 sets that will be available through storehorsemen.com after the show, but one thing that got my attention on the sets from the show are the black and white scarabs on the front of the package.

I haven’t been able to bring myself to open them yet. I mean – right now they’re so pristine! I’ll need some convincing… Leave a comment below.

What an awesome way to start off Toy Fair – with Toypocalypse, an art show held at Toy Tokyo, featuring 10 years of action figure goodness from the Four Horsemen. The show opened tonight and will run through next Thursday, but I felt compelled to go tonight, before the craziness of Toy Fair began.

The show space was packed full of 4H fans – but the really overwhelming part was just seeing all the toys that the 4H have had a big hand in getting to our shelves. One section of the show space was dedicated to a “making of” section for the next figure that will be gracing our shelves – the Fantastic Exclusive Gothitropolis Scarabus.
