DC Universe Classics Wave 17 – a Response by Cliff Francis

After we posted about the much-discussed rumored line-up for DC Universe Classics wave 17, we received this response from Cliff Francis. While I don’t often agree with his point of view, I do often find myself amused with how he tries gets his point across. On this topic, I think he has some interesting ideas. So, give it a read and see what you think!

You can also find Cliff at Costume Contumely, his blog about “Comic Books, Action Figures, and More.”

No Pot Of Gold At The End Of Mattel’s Rainbow

Did you enjoy the DC Universe Classics 6” action figure line by Mattel and the Four Horsemen? Did it take the place in your heart as THE DC Comics action figure line of all time? Did you have fun tracking down new figures and anticipating ones to come? Well I hope you got a lot of satisfaction out of it because it’s over.

Done. Finished.

It comes to and end next spring when Mattel will ship wave 17.

You think I’m joking?

Then clearly you haven’t been paying attention to the recent (as yet unsubstantiated) leak of the character assortment for that wave.

There are some really cool insights from the Four Horsemen how cost can impact product feature decisions for action figures. There’s some very interesting reading here.

Way back when the voting was going on for Scarabus, you guys – the FANtastic FANatics chose how much and what kind of articulation Scarabus should have. Well, at that time, Scarabus’ evil prevailed and the pricing structure for the figure with all of the articulation and other features added in turned out to be much more expensive to produce than we’d planned, so Scarabus was pulled back temporarily so we could figure out a more cost effective way to produce him.

Scarabus went through a few costing phases with multiple factories before we finally came upon a factory that could not only offer us a decent competitive price for everything we wanted to include, but they would also provide us with the production quality that we expected.

A couple of alterations still would have to be made to keep the production costs at a point where we could pass the figure on to you at a decent price, but they’re alterations that we can all live with.

First, although we feared that a lot of the articulation would have to be removed from Scarabus, the only thing that really had to be removed was the “ab crunch”. With the detailed sculpting on top of that area requiring separate parts made out of a different material, the extra costs were just unnecessary.

Second was the cape. Although we would like to have had a cloth cape on this figure instead of the soft plastic cape that we’re going with, the unit cost would have doubled for each figure. WAY to much expense to eat or pass on to our fans!

So, here is a diagram of the articulation you can expect with the gruesome guardian of Gothitropolis. Take a look, and then hit the Gothitropolis section of the FANtastic Exclusive message boards to let us know what you think!

Alright, you already know that Action Figure Xpress will be selling the 2010 New York Comic Con exclusive Outer Space Men: Beta Phase waves characters – Astro-Nautilus & Inferno at their NYCC booth (#1977) for just $24.00 per pair.

You also already know that Toy Tokyo will be selling the 2010 New York Comic Con exclusive Outer Space Men: Beta Phase waves characters – Metamorpho & Xodiac at their NYCC booth (#2871) for just $24.00 per pair.

You’ve also read below that the sales of all of these figures at the New York Comic Con will be limited to only 300 pcs. per figure!

What you may not have heard, or only heard rumors of, is that this Friday at 9:00pm EST, 30 full sets of these extremely limited figures will be sold exclusively through our online retail outlet – Store Horsemen!

That’s right, even if you can’t make it to the New York Comic Con (Oct. 8, 9, 10 – 2010), the owners of AFX & Toy Tokyo have graciously agreed to allow us to sell an extra 30 of each of the four OSM characters (Astro-Nautilus, Inferno, Metamorpho & Xodiac) as a set so that everyone will have a chance to own them!

Sales through Store Horsemen will be strictly limited to one set per customer for the first 24 hours. If, after the first 24 hours, there are any sets left to be sold, sales will be opened to unlimited amounts per customer.

After the alloted 30 sets are sold, any accidentally sold sets beyond the initial 30 will be cancelled.

You do not need to be registered to FANtastic Exclusive to purchase the sets this time. You just have to be there on time and be quick on the draw.
