After a tense weekend, Club Eternia hit its subscription target for 2015. Anyone at all surprised? šŸ˜€

GrayskullPR_newsPageMOTUC 2015 Club EterniaĀ®: You Did It!

Yes, you do have the power! The fans have spoken, and itā€™s officialā€¦ weā€™ve reached our subscription goal for the final Club EterniaĀ®! That means weā€™ll be seeing Lizard Man, Ninja Warrior, Huntaraā„¢, club-exclusive Oo-LarrĀ®, and the rest of the lineup for 2015.

Itā€™s been an amazing journey for the Masters of the UniverseĀ® Classics line, starting in 2008 with King Grayskullā„¢ at San Diego Comic-Con, followed by He-ManĀ®, Beast ManĀ®, SkeletorĀ®, and all the others leading up to this final year. We canā€™t wait to get started on 2015, when weā€™ll wrap up the vintage and A-list characters and the ā€œFall of Eterniaā€ mini comic storyline. We thank each and every one of you who subscribed and made it possible. Weā€™ll have more news about the rest of the lineup in the months ahead, so make sure you sign up to get email updates!

Soapbox Sunday: Mattycollector to Close Doors after 2015?

To be frank, I haven’t been paying much attention to the Mattycollector subscription drive this year. Last year, I did a fair bit of agonizing over Club Eternia before re-upping very late in the game. Sure, I chuckled a bit and wondered what was behind Mattel’s announcement that they would *limit* subscriptions for 2015Ā –Ā but I still waited toĀ see Mattel’s 1st quarter selections for Club Eternia, then subscribed without much further thought.

So it was somewhat of a surprise to see the subscription drama starting to unfold just like it did last year – with an impassioned plea from Toy Guru followed by a confirmation from the Four Horsemen along the lines of “hey, this isn’t a marketing ploy – it’s real.” To state the obvious, this is not good news for Mattycollector. And it begs the question if the collector-oriented site will follow Masters of the Universe Classics into the sunset after 2015.

Mattel Announces DC Universe Classics Doomsday Unleashed after Jail-Suit Sells Out

Doomsday Unleashed vs Bound

Mattel has been leveraging the “All Men Must Die” marketing from Game of Thrones for its Masters of the Universe Classics line, and now it seems like they’re going the Lord of the Rings route for DC – because they’ve just added yet another “final figure” to DC Universe Classics. At first it was the Damien Wayne Robin to close out the line. Then Super Powers. Then the Jail-Suit “Bound” Doomsday. And now, after another fade to white – Doomsday Unleashed.

Celebrating the official end of the Four Horsemen 6″ DC Universe line, Mattel is excited to partner with Warner Bros. and DC Comics to bring you the long-in-coming ā€œUnleashedā€ Doomsday figure! He will be available this winter in an amazing window box diorama as a standalone day-of purchase! Images and full details to come, but we couldn’t wait to share this news with our fans! This final figure will celebrate the end of a fantastic toy line.

Sure, I know Unleashed is what I wanted from the start, but I can’t help but feel like I’ve been manipulated more than just a little bit. When the collector community questioned the “Bound” exclusive for this year’s SDCC, Mattel told us that because we didn’t buy into another year of Classics (yes, it was our fault again), they couldn’t make the Doomsday most of us wanted. And now, as that exclusive has sold out, Mattel finds a way to get Unleashed to Mattycollector. Curiouser and curiouser!

SDCC 2014: Mattel: Mattypalooza 2014 – Video

SDCC 2014 Masters of the Universe Classics He-Man Hsss Robots

From San Diego Comic-Con this past Friday, here’s our video of the Mattel’s Mattypalooza panel. The panel was understandably a bit light on the DC and Ghostbuster propertiesĀ –Ā DC Universe Classics is wrapping up this year with the Conner Kent Superboy, Damian Wayne Robin, and the Super Powers 6-figure line-up, and Ghostbusters has an anemic offering of the four Ghostbusters with removable Proton Packs – they had these tooled up in anticipation of making the Ecto-1, which sadly didn’t hit the pre-order minimum last year.

Most of the panel was devoted to Masters of the Universe – the bulk of which was focused on the “last year” of Classics (including the Snake Armor He-Man / Battle Armor King Hsss two pack and Skeletor’s Hover Robot 3-pack shown above), but also included a portion on the “franchise” outside of toys,Ā mostly comic books. For the action figures, Toy Guru was a bit enigmatic on what we’d see after 2015Ā – he did say in the panel that 2015 would be the wrap-up of the vintage line, but that 6-inch might continue, just in a different way. For his comments, you can skip to about 44 minutes into the video.

What is also uncertain is the future of Mattel’s long-term collaboration with the Four Horsemen after 2015. Was Cornboy hinting at a change during his sentimental intro? What do you guys think?

SDCC 2014: Four Horsemen Plan to Follow Gothitropolis Ravens with Mythic Legions Kickstarter

SDCC 2014 - Four Horsemen Studios

It’s been a long road traveled for the Four Horsemen’s highly successful Gothitropolis Ravens Kickstarter project, and the finish line is in sight. I talked to Cornboy at Preview Night, and although it was tough going, working with three separate factories to get through the pantographing to tooling to painted prototypes, but the 4H are very happy that the quality of the factory samples is meeting their exacting standards.
