SDCC 2015: Hot Toys – Star Wars, Marvel, and Terminator

SDCC 2015 Hot Toys (1 of 51)

One booth stop I must make every year at Comic-Con is Sideshow Collectibles, to see the Hot Toys they’ve got on display. But it’s a bit of an odd licensing vs. distribution conundrum this year, for all parties involved. Hot Toys has started cranking out the Star Wars figures, and Sideshow is their distributor in the States. But Sideshow has also held their own Star Wars license for longer than Hot Toys has. Coopetition?

Let’s see what Hot Toys has done in the short time they’ve held their Star Wars license, and see what else they’re up to.

SDCC 2015: Beast Kingdom Star Wars Darth Vader and Magnetic Floating Iron Man Exclusives

SDCC 2015 Beast Kingdom exclusive Star Wars Darth Vader and Floating Iron Man Mark III

Beast Kingdom from Taiwan will have two super cute exclusives at San Diego Comic-Con, courtesy of Blue Fin. Darth Vader and Iron Man will be featured in their “Egg Attack” looks, which I think are thusly named for their oversized but adorable egg-shaped noggins.

Both feature LED lights, and the Iron Man has a truly remarkable magnetic floating feature that allows it to hover, spinning, over its base. Bluefin products will be located on the Main Hall in Booths #3545 and #140.

Off Topic: Marvel and Samsung Team-Up for the Galaxy S6 Edge Iron Man Phone

Limited edition phone is exclusive to Asian markets

Samsung Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Limited Edition

If you’ve been debating whether Tony Stark is an iPhone or Android guy, argue no more – he’s an Android guy. (At least for as long as those promotional dollars from Samsung are good.) It makes sense though, right? I mean, this is the guy who created the Iron Legion, Ultron, and the Vision… Androids. To prove the point, Samsung is releasing an Iron Man themed version of their flagship phone.

The Galaxy S6 edge Iron Man Limited Edition comes with a metallic red and gold color scheme, an Iron Man-themed interface, and an ARC reactor that doubles as a wireless charging station. The catch? For now, this phone will only be available in Korea (starting tomorrow) and China and Hong Kong (starting in June). I think the US would rather have a Hulk phone.

Hot Toys Reveals Avengers: Age of Ultron Iron Man Mark XLV and Iron Legion

Hot Toys revealed its latest figures from Avengers: Age of Ultron – a pair of Iron Man figures. The Mark XLV armor was introduced late in the movie without the typical fanfare we’d have seen if this were from a solo Iron Man flick. It’s the latest Diecast release, and in addition to the normal accessories, it comes with several blast effects and a damaged Ultron Prime as part of its base. The Mark XLV is my favorite look for Iron Man thus far in the entire franchise. The curves give it a more organic look than the previous armors, and I think it strikes just the right balance of red with a touch of gold.

In contrast, the Iron Legion figure looks wholly like a machine. There’s no mistaking that there’s not a person in that suit of armor. In many ways, the design reminds me of clunkier toys like the defunct Sigma Six G.I. JOE figures. This particular Iron Legion is identified as “03” – I don’t know if that’s significant to the creation of the Ultron Mark I, but I’d think it would have been cool if Hot Toys provided number decals so you could recreate more of the Iron Legion. I bet someone supplies decal kits in the aftermarket.

You can pre-order the Marvel Iron Man Mark XLV Sixth Scale Figure at Sideshow Collectibles. The Iron Legion hasn’t shown up for pre-order yet, but we’ll keep searching Sideshow for it.

Bandai Reveals S.H. Figuarts Avengers: Age of Ultron Hulkbuster Iron Man

Bandai S.H. Figuarts Avengers Age of Ultron Hulkbuster Iron Man

The last time we saw the Avengers: Age of Ultron line from S.H. Figuarts, Bandai was showing off the Iron Man Mark 45, and the Hulkbuster Iron Man was still being teased. Now, as the Hulkbuster nears the start of its pre-orders in Japan a week from today, we’re glad to final see it and learn more about its features.

The Hulkbuster Mark 44 will clock in at nearly 10 inches tall. While it’s 1/12 scaled, some may find it a bit small if you’re looking to add it to a Marvel Legends collection. The Hulkbuster will also include some diecast parts, and have LED light-up features. And it looks to have some serious articulation. Some Figuarts figures include interchangeable hands – this one might have jointed figures allowing everything from fists to a repulsor blast poses.

This won’t be cheap though. The pre-order price in Japan is about $285. We’ll keep a watch out for pre-orders for the States.
