Border Patrol: Marvel Legends Falcon, Electro, and Sunspot

This week’s Border Patrol features two Marvel characters from upcoming movies plus one that would be cool to see in an X-Men movie.

  • Marvel Legends Falcon (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) by Stevid customs – while a bit simplified from the ultra-detailed costume revealed for the Winter Soldier movie, this Falcon nevertheless captures the feel of the movie costume – ends Mar 26, 2014 18:30:13 PDT
  • Marvel Legends Electro by Spidey Customs – made from the movie Electro, this custom attempts to take it back to the comic look with some creative license applied – ends Apr 01, 2014 02:33:48 PDT
  • Marvel Legends Sunspot by Shinobitron – while I was never much of a fan of the New Mutants in the comics, I think a character like Sunspot would have been a better fit for the younger X-Men in the First Class movies, rather than creating a continuity problem by adding Cyclops’ younger brother Havok to a movie set 30+ years earlier – this custom looks sharp but could use some of those sunspots – ends Mar 30, 2014 18:24:05 PDT

In AFP’s Border Patrol, we scour active eBay auctions for customized action figures that you won’t want to let slip by!

The Avengers: Doomed! – BillsComics.com

The last time we saw them, the Avengers faced off against the Hulk in “Angry Man!” In the continuation of that story from Bill’s Comics, now they’re “Doomed!” Like the last comic, this one features a cover by Glenn Turner. Enjoy!

The Guardians of the Galaxy Trailer Will Blow You Away

Guardians of the Galaxy Movie Trailer Pic

The Guardians of the Galaxy just got its first official trailer, and flark if it didn’t blow me away. It hits on all the right notes, evoking Indiana Jones (Raiders Indy, not Crystal Skull Indy), Firefly, and even a little bit of the Usual Suspects. I think Marvel has nailed it with its casting again (why can’t Warner Brothers figure it out for DC?), and if this is a smash, Chris Pratt should be catapulted into RDJ heights of stardom. But make no mistake, I think Rocket Raccoon will steal every scene in this movie – both kids and adults will love him.

This is all good news for the toys. The Guardians of the Galaxy Marvel Legends Infinite Series figures should hit shelves in July, and three LEGO Marvel sets for Guardians of the Galaxy should hit in June. The movie opens August 1st.

Toy Fair 2014: Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

Guardians of the Galaxy (Photo - CoolToyReview.com)

This year I find myself in the rather odd position of reporting on Toy Fair without actually being there. A casualty of the winter storms Pax and Quintus, I’m warm on the west coast but missing the fun of seeing the figures up close and personal. It’s the first time being on the sidelines since I started covering Toy Fair back in the heyday of Toy Biz’s Marvel Legends run in 2005.

In many ways we’re seeing Hasbro’s (second) run of Marvel Legends entering similar territory. Back then, Toy Biz was making waves with the Marvel Legends Sentinel wave. And yet, macroeconomic factors were causing big changes in the industry, and the next year turned out to be Toy Biz’s swan song, with the announcement that they had licensed the Marvel toy lines to Hasbro. Those same factors – rising costs of raw materials and labor, consolidation of retailers  – are still in play today for Hasbro. Rather than shutter the Legends line again, Hasbro’s Marvel team announced a shift in branding strategy at SDCC last year, and with their Toy Fair showing, we’re seeing how that plays out in the Marvel Legends line.

Were You Hoping for GotG Marvel Legends from the Comics? Star-Lord is Coming

Star-Lord comic panel

While I am sure there’s many fans who are psyched for the movie-based Marvel Legends figures for Guardians of the Galaxy, I know that there’s also a group who hoped for comics-based versions of GotG. After all, we’ve already gotten Drax the Destroyer and Rocket Raccoon. Drax joined Marvel Legends courtesy of the Arnim Zola wave in 2012, and Rocket Raccoon was the second mini-BAF from last year.

Rest assured, Hasbro has the makings for Star-Lord already produced, and you may already have the proof in your collection.
