Hasbro is kicking off New York Toy Fair with its event for online media. To get you the pics you want as fast as I can, I’m hooking you into my Instagram feed. If you’re on Instagram, follow me at afpron – that’s for AFP Ron, not AF Pron :). Stay tuned for better pictures soon.

AFP’s Best of 2012 – Ron’s Picks

It’s almost February, so I figured I better get to my picks (and pics) for Best of 2012! I’ll get us started with one of the choices I included in the Fwoosh Best of 2012 post – the Marvel Legends Build-A-Figure Arnim Zola.

2012 was a great year for Marvel Legends, with Hasbro finally getting the flagship line back to retail. And it was an especially great year for Marvel villains. In the three 2012 waves, we got: Terrax, Constrictor, Klaw, Madame Masque, Madame Hydra, Daken, Mystique, Dr. Doom, Thunderball, and Piledriver. You could even throw in the Marvel Select Ultron.

But none stand above Arnim Zola, the Build-A-Figure for wave 2. C’mon! It’s Arnim Zola!

Best of 2012 - Marvel Legends Arnim Zola

The World War II WMD dealer looks like he popped out of a Jack Kirby drawing. He’s got the classic orange and purple color scheme, with the tunic and skirt. His legs are ribbed for your pleasure, and he’s got the trademark Kirby flare on his crotch flap. And that Zola face? Pure evil.

To top it all off, via the Madames and Wrecking Crew running changes, you can give your classic Zola a modern twist – the BAF pieces that came with Madame Hydra and Piledriver let you build a Red Skull trapped in a Zola construct. That’s why Zola is the best of 2012 – quit arguing and just accept it.

Hasbro Iron Man 3 Marvel Legends Series 1 with Build-A-Figure Iron Monger at eBay

Marvel Legends Iron Man Wave 1 Set

When we saw the line-up for Iron Man Marvel Legends at BigBadToyStore a couple weeks ago, I wondered if, with just three figures in the wave, if the Iron Monger Build-A-Figure that Hasbro teased back at San Diego Comic-Con would still be part of the line. Now that Hasbro Iron Man 3 Marvel Legends is hitting eBay, we know the answer is a resounding “Yes!” It’s going to take six figures across two waves to do it, and if Hasbro can improve the distribution that we saw with Hulk Legends and Fin Fang Foom, we should be in pretty good shape.

Design Your Own Armor with Hasbro’s Iron Man 3 “Iron Assemblers” Action Figures

A2973 War Machine

Tony Stark has nothing on you – with Hasbro’s upcoming Iron Assemblers line from Iron Man 3, you’ll have the ability to design your own Iron Man armors for a completely customized armory. You may have seen Hasbro’s announcement of the new line at USAToday.com – they’ve followed it up with these pics and the official press release. I’m glad to see these are 3.75-inches – the USA Today piece listed a confusing 3.25-inches – so these should hopefully be scale-compatible with your existing line of movie and Marvel Universe figures.

I like the idea – it’s a creative mash-up of the action figure and builder categories, and Iron Man is a great property for this kind of product. With a single figure, Hasbro says you’ll be able to create 25 or more variations. But the real kicker is that the armor parts can be combined across figures, for hundreds of possibilities from the line’s planned 16 individual figures.
