Toy Fair 2014: Masters of the Universe Classics Rio Blast, Club Etheria, and DC Super Powers Highlight Mattycollector Reveals

There’s no substitute for seeing the figures in person, but Mattel has been kind enough to share the big reveals from its Collector Event this afternoon via the Mattycollector site. In previous teases leading up to Toy Fair, Mattel promised a subscription in the likes of Club Filmation in 2013 and a send-off for DC Universe Classics – and they did exactly that. Club Etheria is a six figure sub that apparently will have some day of sales. The previously revealed Madam Razz and Broom land in this sub, which also features Double Mischief, Entrapta, and the club exclusive Light Hope. An additional accessory was shown for one of the unrevealed figures – if you didn’t guess it, Mattel provided a spoiler in the image file name.

As for the DC Universe Classics send-off, Mattycollector will offer 6 figures, 3 each in September and October – with an enticing Collect & Connect if you get all six. It’s a Super Powers send-off, featuring Batman, Superman (in 2 flavors, one of them in the fan-demanded light blue), Wonder Woman, Green Lantern as the Riddler, and Mr. Mxyzptlk. The C&C is Kalibak, in his Super Powers brown colors. It really is a fitting finale for the line, which Mattel and the Four Horsemen have said had its roots in the classic Super Powers line.

Finally, Rio Blast was revealed as the September figure for Club Eternia. For fans of the Spirit of Hordak chase figure, Mattel will repeat that in 2014, with a Kowl and Loo-Kee 2-pack. And in a licensing move that feels odd to action figure collectors, Mattel is making Hot Wheels from Marvel Comics. And there’s much more – read on for the press release and pics.

Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok Headlines February Sale; Mattel Epic Creations for Valentines Day?

MattyCollector Valentines Day Ad - Epic Creations

With just one brand to drive MattyCollector, it’ll be a hit or miss affair each month for casual Masters fans. With the Masters of the Universe Classics Modulok on the docket, it should prove to be a popular month, even if the $44 price tag will discourage some. Princess of Power’s Glimmer, and the mini He-Man and Mer-Man 2-pack round out the new offerings.

In what will be a monthly reminder for sad DC Universe Classics collectors, Mattel continues to unload the remaining customer service stock. This month it’s Larfleeze and Phantom Stranger. And, Epic Creations remain in stock – Castle Grayskull, the Neutrino Wand, and the Batman Utility Belt don’t seem to be in any danger of sellout, despite the claims of limited availability back in December.

The Mattycollector February sale Early Access starts tomorrow at 8AM, and here’s the link for the February bundle page for the all-access sale opening Monday at 9AM. Sadly, Modulok and Glimmer are not available in Early Access.

A Star Wars Christmas Story by Macas

Most folks have taken down their lights and packed away their Christmas decorations for the year, but AFP reader Macas sent in a story from his childhood that put me right back in the holiday spirit. It’s a story about the one toy that would make or break his Christmas – and change his life forever. He now makes a living as a toy dealer, buying and selling toy collections, so he’s living the dream!

Spoiler alert – no tongues get stuck to flagpoles, but I can’t promise he didn’t shoot his eye out with a laser blaster.

Win a Signed Masters of the Universe Classics Fisto in Mattycollector Photo Contest

If you’re looking for another opportunity to get Fisted by Mattycollector (groan, I know) then here’s your chance. In another “show off your collection” contest, Mattel is offering up four Masters of the Universe Classics Fisto figures, signed by Toy Guru and Terry Higuchi. If you weren’t a Club Eternia subscriber in 2012, chances are you weren’t able to get him, at least off of the Mattycollector site.

Since the Matty team plans on announcing the winners at Toy Fair, time is short – so get snapping and submit your entry before the contest closes on Thursday, February 6.

Fisto Contest 1/27 – 2/6
Enter to Win a Signed Fisto™ Figure

Mattycollector Fisto contest

What’s a whole lot better than a knuckle sandwich? How about getting your hands on a highly popular Fisto™ figure! Send us your best shot of your Masters of the Universe® toy collection and you could be one of four lucky winners. Here’s how…

Our line is entering its sixth year, and we want to see how impressive your collection has become. Show us how creative you are at displaying your figures. Who has the prime spot front and center? Who’s conspiring in the back? Who’s in your army? (You do have an army, right?) We’re looking for originality, enthusiasm, and that true collector spirit.

This highly popular figure sold out faster than you can say “five fierce fingers” when it was released in February 2012 and has not been available since. But, we convinced our marketing and design departments to part with four figures from their own personal collections, and we’ll award them to the most deserving fans based on the entries we receive. These figures are new, still in the box, and signed by our own Toy Guru Scott Neitlich and the figure’s designer Terence Higuchi.

Make sure you read ALL the rules (click here to get the forms you need) and submit them to us with your photo as a JPG. We’ll select the winners and announce them at the New York Toy Fair and on MattyCollector.com on or before February 17, 2014. The winning photos will be also posted (#FistoContest) for enhanced glory and bragging rights.

No Shipping Options on Digital River Bugs Mattycollector January Early Access

Even if you wanted to spend about $50 to pick up a Masters of the Universe Classics Ram Man during Mattycollector’s January Early Access, you were head-butted out of the buying process. A bug in the Digital River shopping cart kept Club Eternia subscribers from completing their purchases this morning – no shipping options were presented in the drop-down menu, and any attempts to continue would result in an endless loop on the page.

I was looking to pick one up for a Free Stuff giveaway and made a couple attempts thinking that I couldn’t read the highly unintelligible Captcha codes. Very frustrating! Just chalk it up as another snafu in Digital River’s service record during their Mattycollector tenure.
