To My Brother Jay

In the early morning hours last night, my brother passed away in his sleep. Despite a very healthy lifestyle (he loved golf, cycling, and playing ice hockey; never smoked; and had to be coerced to have a glass of wine with a meal) he suffered from a heart condition that countless doctors could not figure out. He’s survived by his wife and two wonderful kids.

He’s one of the big reasons I love action figures and photography. I lived with him a few summers while I was in college and he was out in the working world. He had stopped collecting comics, but he let me go through his long boxes, and I was introduced to Eastman and Laird’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Claremont and Byrne’s Uncanny X-Men, Frank Miller’s Daredevil, and a whole lot more. I got hooked.

A few years later, he lived with me while recuperating from a terrible motorcycle accident, but he was a bit disappointed in my comic collection – what can I say? – it was the 90s. When he survived his first heart attack, I gave him a Marvel Legends First Appearance Iron Man. And in more recent times, I shared some titles with him that were more worthy of his attention, like Whedon’s Astonishing X-Men and Brubaker’s Captain America and Immortal Iron Fist.

I spoke to him a couple of days ago. No talk of comics, but I was going to recommend he read Gail Simone’s Secret Six. I feel an emptiness that defies description. Jay, I love you and miss you.

Update: I’m at the airport, waiting for my flight to join my family at my brother’s home. When I first pressed the publish button on this post, I almost immediately recalled it – I thought it was horribly self-indulgent and not what folks are signed up to see here – I apologize if anybody was offended.

For those of you who have left comments or sent me messages directly – thank you so much. I’m still in a daze and imagine I will be this way for some time, but your thoughts and encouragement have been very helpful. Thank you again!

NECA Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – Using Photoshop Levels to Enhance Dramatic Lighting

As much as I love what Playmates is doing with their Nickolodeon Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lines (stay tuned for some quick pics from Talyn coming up tomorrow), I have a special place in my collection for the NECA TMNT figures from a few years back. I had a picture of my TMNT setup from back when I added tap lights to my display cubes, but that picture was from before I had April.

Since then, the shelf and figures had gotten pretty dusty, so I took the opportunity to clean them up and take a new picture. In this article, I’ll also show you what I did in Photoshop with the Levels tool to enhance the lighting effects for this particular shot.

SDCC 2012: Marvel HeroClix Exclusive Giant-Man and Ant-Man (Kinda) Reveal

We’re catching up on SDCC exclusives, and a few weeks back, NECA revealed its HeroClix exclusive – Giant-Man, with an in-scale (read: too small for you to see him and too small for them to put anything on the HeroClix base) Ant-Man.

Don’t worry – NECA is making an actual HeroClix figure for Ant-Man too – he’ll come with his better half, the Wasp.

NECA Does SDCC Pt. 1: Giant-Man HeroClix Unveiled!

We’re Con Bound!

Over the next few weeks, we’re going to be giving special sneak peaks out our 2012 convention exclusives, and we start today with the brand-spanking new 2012 Convention Exclusive Marvel HeroClix Giant-Man Super Booster! Priced at $39.99, Giant-Man also includes a proportionate Ant-Man HeroClix figure that’s invisible!

No, really, like he’s not there. Set to the scale of Giant-Man, you can’t see Henry Pym when he shrinks all the way down to Ant-Man size. Also, when Marvel HeroClix first premiered way back in 2002, a similar Ant-Man was offered at conventions that year, so this Ant-Man makes a perfect bonus piece for Pym as Giant-Man. As you can see above, there’s a base with Ant-Man on it, and you’ll just have to take our word for it that he’s there. You can’t possibly imagine how hard it was to sculpt something so small that it’s invisible to the naked eye.

Size Matters

Henry Pym AKA Giant-Man first appeared in Marvel’s Tales to Astonish #56 in 1964, having already made his debut as Ant-Man in issue #35 two years earlier. Rumors have been kicking around for a while now about a movie in the works, so we thought no better time to debut this Giant-Man Chaos War HeroClix!

Like all of the figures in the Chaos War collection, Giant-Man is gorgeously detailed and accurate to the comics. He’ll be available at San Diego Comic Con and other upcoming 2012 conventions.

For more on HeroClix, be sure to check out the Marvel Chaos War HeroClix collection, and keep it tuned to your favorite action figures wholesaler for other 2012 convention exclusives to come and all the best merchandise from your favorite games, movies, and more!

Toy Fair 2011 – NECA Duke Nukem, Terminator, Gears of War, BioShock

NECA (13) (1280x853).jpg

I’m getting settled back in after a whirlwind trip to NYC for Toy Fair, so I’ll be posting the remaining pics over the next few days. Up next is NECA – I will probably never forgive them for deep-sixing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles wave 2 figures, but I’ll admit that it’s hard to keep the blood boiling when they continue to put out awesome figures for the lines that have continued to thrive. A new addition this year is a Duke Nukem figure to accompany Duke Nukem Forever. I could make a joke about what the Forever stands for in the game name, but I won’t. I was also really impressed by the new Terminator figures, although I have a tough time finding those in my local TRUs.

They also had some more Gears of War, BioShock, and Claptrap from Borderlands on display. VeeBee was disappointed I missed the Gremlins stuff – I’m not sure how I could overlook those.
