Toy Fair 2013: Hasbro Star Wars Black Series (6-inch)

I couldn’t rightly go to sleep tonight without posting about the recently announced Star Wars Black Series. With their announcement of the new 6-inch line, Hasbro had highlighted one of the figures in the first wave of four – the X-Wing Luke Skywalker. The Star Wars team spent some time talking about the genesis of the line – they wanted to create a line of figures that recalled specific scenes from the movies – ones that would be iconic and instantly recognizable to fans. For Luke, that meant poring over tons of reference and agonizing over details as specific as clothing folds.

That attention to detail, with partner Gentle Giant, as paid off, as Hasbro showed off the rest of the first wave – R2-D2, the Sand Trooper, and Darth Maul – and teased the inevitable San Diego Comic-Con exclusive.

Toy Fair 2013: Four Horsemen Reveal Power Lords 2-Ups

The Power Lords were front and center at the Four Horsemen’s Toypocalypse event tonight.

I was telling Hagop tonight that I have no recollection of the Power Lords, and he made the hurtful suggestion that maybe I was just too old. When the Four Horsemen announced the license, I looked at the old ads featuring the figures – since I didn’t have the nostalgic connection I had a hard time envisioning the brand as something that I’d want for myself.

These two-ups, though, are just really smart looking. I really like the re-imagined designs and the color palette. I’m very glad they separated the figures instead of trying to incorporate the “flip the figure for the powered-up guy” feature. The 4H style is unmistakeable. In that sense I wish these were going to be 6-inches instead of 4-inches, just because they look like they’d look great standing next to some DC Universe Classics figures.

Toy Fair 2013: Four Horsemen to Kickstart Fantastic Exclusive Ravens

Talked to Cornboy briefly at Toypocalypse tonight – the Four Horsemen will be launching a Kickstarter campaign to finally get the Fantastic Exclusive Ravens into our hands.

I’ve got to admit – I’m a bit of a crowdfunding fanatic, and I am regularly looking for cool projects to back on Kickstarter. So when I saw the green Kickstarter logo next to 2-ups of a new set of Ravens and variants, I was pretty enthused. In the past, the Four Horsemen were able to fund the production of the Fantastic Exclusive Seventh Kingdom and Gothitropolis figures, with a little assistance from some of the toy sites and retailers. At the Fwoosh, we were pretty excited to participate in two of those waves.

In the years that followed, though, the economics to self-fund a super-articulated line grew too onerous, and the 4H focused on smaller, less articulated figures like the Outer Space Men. But the Ravens remained near and dear to their hearts, and with the advent of crowdfunding, they believe they’ve found a way to get these made.

They showed eleven figures, including the fanboy-inspired minotaur / duck mashup, but at this point haven’t decided what will be included in the Kickstarter campaign. There’s still discussions on whether some of the variants belong in Seventh Kingdom or Gothitropolis. While some folks might have a stake in one or the other, to me it makes no difference – just get these birds made!

Toy Fair 2013: Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

Hasbro Marvel Legends (1 of 29)

Fans of 6-inch Marvel action figures, there’s good news from today’s Toy Fair presentation from Hasbro – Marvel Legends is continuing to go strong in 2013 with the main Legends line and not one, but two movie-supported sister lines in Iron Man Legends and Wolverine Legends. We got to see one full never-before-seen wave for each of the three, including the Build-A-Figures. And in the case of the main line, were clued into some character choices for the next wave.
