Weekend Toy Run: Marvel Legends All New X-Men Exclusive Set Up For Pre-Order

Marvel Legends All-New X-Men - Packaging

Toys R Us has their exclusive Marvel legends All New X-Men box set available for pre-order. The preliminary info we had (check out more pics of the Marvel Legends All New X-Men box set) had the set due to arrive at stores a the start of this month for $84.99. The pre-order page has it listed with an expected 3/19 ship date and an $89.99 price tag.

A delay in overseas shipping is pretty common, but the price increase is just Toys R Us looking to capitalize on the increased popularity of the current Legends line-up, which has had pretty good sell-through in their stores. I guess the silver lining here is that the Marvel Legends line is selling well.

Toy Fair 2014: Hasbro Marvel Legends Report

Guardians of the Galaxy (Photo - CoolToyReview.com)

This year I find myself in the rather odd position of reporting on Toy Fair without actually being there. A casualty of the winter storms Pax and Quintus, I’m warm on the west coast but missing the fun of seeing the figures up close and personal. It’s the first time being on the sidelines since I started covering Toy Fair back in the heyday of Toy Biz’s Marvel Legends run in 2005.

In many ways we’re seeing Hasbro’s (second) run of Marvel Legends entering similar territory. Back then, Toy Biz was making waves with the Marvel Legends Sentinel wave. And yet, macroeconomic factors were causing big changes in the industry, and the next year turned out to be Toy Biz’s swan song, with the announcement that they had licensed the Marvel toy lines to Hasbro. Those same factors – rising costs of raw materials and labor, consolidation of retailers  – are still in play today for Hasbro. Rather than shutter the Legends line again, Hasbro’s Marvel team announced a shift in branding strategy at SDCC last year, and with their Toy Fair showing, we’re seeing how that plays out in the Marvel Legends line.

Border Patrol: Marvel Legends by AC Custom Figures

This week, there’s a few Marvel Legends customs up by AC Custom Figures – I couldn’t pick just one to feature, so I decided to highlight all of them.

  • Marvel Legends Captain America – you may or may not like the ones we have up in our ML Cap vs Spidey Free Stuff Giveaway, but I think there’s no denying this one – there’s something so clean and appealing about it – it’s billed as an Olivetti-styled Cap to explain the larger physique – ends today Feb 04, 2014 19:00:42 PST
  • Marvel Legends Superior Spider-Man – again, if you’re not feeling the Superior Spidey in our giveaway, this previously-owned custom has more details that the official release omits, like the gauntlets and backpack – ends Feb 06, 2014 11:45:17 PST
  • Marvel Legends Magik – while I like this custom, what it really does is serve to remind me that the older Jean Grey body, while an upgrade to what came before it, is really more suitable for teenaged females – ends today Feb 04, 2014 19:04:37 PST

If you’re a fan of Marvel Comics and are looking for something to class up your man cave, then this sale at Woot is for you. The Marvel Comic Book Canvas Art Sale features your favorite Marvel heroes and villains depicted in classic covers or comic book panels – but printed on canvas versus shoddy poster paper. Border Patrol: Marvel Legends Sirens – Scream, Spider-Woman, and Storm

This week I found a few Marvel Legends females that show how the new Hasbro bodies are way ahead of what’s come before them.

  • Marvel Legends Scream by glennwebman69 – this spawn of Venom uses the Jean Grey body – it works for Scream’s lithe body type – great sculpt and paint here enhance the base figure – ends Feb 02, 2014 18:44:21 PST
  • Marvel Legends Spider-Woman by Loosecollector – this is a previously owned custom being sold by its current owner – the Jean Grey body is a big improvement over the lanky, awkward body that came from Toy Biz (hey, I was happy to get her way back then), but I’ve got to believe that Jessica Drew deserves the badonkadonk from the new Moonstone body – ends Jan 29, 2014 13:41:29 PST
  • Marvel Legends Storm by Wings – the old Toy Biz Storm was great back in the day, but seeing her on the Moonstone body has me convinced the weather witch needs more curves – the approach the customizer used with her hair makes for a nice wind-blown effect, but I would have liked to see it blended better at the hairline – ends Feb 02, 2014 13:08:04 PST
